Florian Wirtz is best understood as a flexible creator rather than a fixed-position No. 10. He can receive between the lines, carry the ball forward, move into wide or advanced spaces and press. That makes him different from Bruno Fernandes, whose standout profile is high-volume chance creation, and Morgan Rogers, whose game is more directly built around carrying and running at opponents. The comparisons below use specifically dated evidence; they are not a current 2026/27 league ranking.
What kind of attacking midfielder is Wirtz?
Liverpool’s official profile describes Wirtz as an attacking midfielder comfortable both scoring and supplying goals. In practice, his role changes with the match and tactical setup: he is not restricted to receiving the ball in one central pocket.
That flexibility was visible before his move to Liverpool. In a June 2025 feature, Liverpool reported that Wirtz played mainly as an inverted left winger for Bayer Leverkusen in 2024/25, with 45 per cent of his open-play touches in the left side of the opposition half, while also drifting across the pitch like a No. 10. Xabi Alonso had also used him as a false nine in 2023/24. Those are historical Leverkusen observations, not a description of his Premier League statistics.
The Premier League’s 2025/26 analyses document Wirtz playing as a central No. 10, left winger, false nine and right-sided option. They describe him moving away from crowded central areas into wider pockets and, as the season progressed, pushing into more advanced spaces. In one earlier example, he started centrally against West Ham after having been used as a false nine, left winger and deeper midfielder; his movement helped create midfield overloads and passing lanes.

How do Wirtz, Fernandes and Rogers differ?
| Player | Best-supported profile | Useful way to assess the role |
|---|---|---|
| Florian Wirtz | A flexible creator who combines close-control carrying, passing between the lines and movement across attacking areas. Historical Leverkusen evidence also shows substantial pressing. | Receiving zones, progression, carries, chance creation and pressing, with team and sample period specified. |
| Bruno Fernandes | The Premier League’s March 2026 comparison presents him as a high-volume creator. | Final-ball volume, through-balls, chance quality and set-piece contribution. |
| Morgan Rogers | The same analysis describes a powerful runner and dribbler in a fluid, second-striker-like position. | Carries, dribbles, shots, penalty-box arrival and direct running. |
The Premier League’s March 2026 comparison reported these 2025/26 figures:
| Player | Chances created | Big chances created |
|---|---|---|
| Bruno Fernandes | 92 | 22 |
| Morgan Rogers | 35 | 10 |
These are season-specific totals from that comparison, not 2026/27 standings. They illustrate the contrast between Fernandes’s chance-creation volume and Rogers’s more direct running profile; they do not establish that one player is categorically better. Nor should these Premier League figures be combined with Wirtz’s Leverkusen statistics, which cover different competitions, seasons and roles.
What do Wirtz’s historical numbers show?
Liverpool’s June 2025 statistical feature by Glenn Price offers a snapshot of Wirtz at Leverkusen. It reported:

- OFFICIAL PREMIER LEAGUE LICENSED BALL: The PUMA Orbita Pro Premier League Soccer Ball is the official ball for the 25/26 Premier League season, ensuring top-tier quality and performance.

- ELITE MATCH BALL: Crafted to meet the highest standards, this top-tier match ball delivers exceptional performance for professional quality play.
- 44 league goal involvements across the preceding two seasons. The feature said only one under-23 player in Europe’s top five divisions had more.
- 253 open-play chances created since his Bundesliga debut in May 2020; Liverpool reported only Thomas Müller had more over that span.
- 2.1 open-play chances per 90 minutes in the 2024/25 Bundesliga, the most among Leverkusen players according to the feature.
- 313 attempted take-ons, 165 dribbles attempted and 82 completed in the 2024/25 Bundesliga.
- 679 pressures in nine 2024/25 Champions League appearances, a team-leading total according to the feature.
Together, these measures support a Leverkusen-era picture of a creator who could also carry and press. They should not be read as current Premier League output: the figures belong to named competitions and periods, and role and team context affect what they measure.

A Premier League analysis published in 2026 compared Wirtz’s first 15 Premier League matches with a subsequent six-match sample from 2025/26. The later sample had more completed dribbles, while the reported expected-assist and expected-goals figures changed only modestly:
| Measure | First 15 matches | Subsequent six matches |
|---|---|---|
| Completed dribbles | 14 | 16 |
| Expected assists (xA) | 1.69 | 1.75 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 2.12 | 2.49 |
This split is a limited illustration of an uneven early adaptation followed by a stronger stretch, not proof of a lasting trend. The samples are unequal in length, and a short run cannot by itself determine a player’s level or settle how well his role fits Liverpool.

What makes the comparison fair?
Listed position alone can obscure what a player is being asked to do. A deeper playmaker, a wide creator and a second striker may all appear among attacking midfielders while having different opportunities to pass, shoot, press or arrive in the box.
- Chance creation: distinguish open-play creation from set pieces, and look at both volume and chance quality.
- Carrying and dribbling: separate attempts from completed dribbles, and consider where carries take the player and the team.
- Shooting and box presence: assess shots and penalty-area arrivals in light of whether the player is a creator or a more advanced runner.
- Movement and receiving zones: note whether a player stays central, drifts wide, drops deeper or attacks space beyond the forwards.
- Pressing and defensive work: compare like-for-like measures from the same competition and period where possible.
- Minutes and team role: prefer rates normalized by minutes when available, and account for the player’s formation and assignment.
The cited Premier League analyses establish tactical distinctions among Wirtz, Fernandes and Rogers, but do not provide one complete, current 2026/27 dataset comparing all three on these measures. A precise all-round statistical ranking would therefore go beyond the available evidence.
Why does Wirtz’s freedom matter?
In a Liverpool interview published on 5 August 2025, Wirtz said: “I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me.” That comment fits the tactical record: his contribution can come from different attacking zones rather than one fixed slot. It also explains why comparisons based only on a position label—or on one season’s totals—can miss the work his movement does to open space for teammates.
