A healthy scratch is a player left out of a particular game lineup; injured reserve (IR) is a formal injury-related roster designation that makes a player ineligible for NHL games for at least seven days. A scratch alone does not mean a player is injured or on IR.
What does “healthy scratch” mean in hockey?
A healthy scratch is a player who is available to the team but not selected for a specific game. It describes a lineup decision, not a league roster transaction. The phrase is common hockey usage; the official NHL sources cited here do not give it a formal rules definition. A player’s absence alone does not establish why the team left them out.
What does injured reserve mean in the NHL?
Injured reserve is a formal status for a player the club deems unable to perform because of injury, illness, or disability. The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement defines IR as the list of players who, for those reasons, are unable to render playing services for an extended period under Article 16 (CBA, Article 1).
NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines say a player physically unable to play for at least seven days after the injury date may be placed on IR. Once placed there, the player cannot compete in NHL games for at least seven days. The club’s medical staff makes the injury determination under its medical standards (NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines).

Healthy scratch vs. IR: the practical differences
| Question | Healthy scratch | Injured reserve |
|---|---|---|
| What does it describe? | Omission from a particular game lineup. | A formal injury-related roster status. |
| Does it establish an injury? | No. The term alone does not establish one. | Yes. Placement is tied to injury, illness, or disability and inability to play. |
| Can the player play that game? | No; the player was left out of that lineup. | No; NHL guidance requires at least seven days of NHL game ineligibility after placement. |
| Effect on roster accounting | A scratch by itself does not change roster status. | IR players do not count against the 23-player limit, and the club may replace an IR player on its NHL roster. |
| What does a report establish? | If accurately reported, that the player was omitted from the lineup. | IR only when a player-specific IR designation is reported. |
Does injured reserve free up an NHL roster spot?
Yes. NHL guidance says clubs may carry at most 23 players on the playing roster during the regular season through the trade deadline, and players on IR do not count toward that limit. The club may replace the IR player on its NHL roster (NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines). A healthy scratch has no such roster-accounting effect merely because the player is not in that night’s lineup.
How is IR different from long-term injured reserve?
IR and long-term injured reserve (LTIR) are separate designations, not interchangeable terms. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes regular IR as applying when injury or illness leaves a player unavailable for seven or more days. It describes LTIR as requiring unavailability for at least 10 games and 24 days, with the club’s spending limit increasing under the stated conditions (Hurricanes transaction primer).

That primer is a club explanation, not a substitute for applying the governing CBA and current NHL rules to a specific team’s cap situation. Ordinary IR does not by itself mean a player’s salary simply stops counting against the cap.

How to read an NHL roster or lineup report
- If a player is called a healthy scratch: read it as a report that the player was omitted from that game’s lineup, not proof of an injury or a longer-term roster move.
- If a player is listed as injured reserve: that is a specific roster designation with the game-ineligibility and roster-accounting consequences described above.
- Check ambiguous headings carefully: the NHL’s September 29, 2026 opening-roster report used the combined heading “Injured and/or Non-Roster.” That heading does not identify each listed player’s exact designation. Confirm an individual player’s specific status before calling it IR (NHL opening-roster report).
