A delayed MLB game may still resume the same day; a postponed game has been moved to another date. A suspended game is different again: it must be completed later from the point where play stopped. Check the specific game’s official MLB listing and the teams’ updates for its status, then use the current MLB.TV listing to confirm viewing options.
Why an MLB game may stop
Weather and playing-field conditions are common practical reasons for a late start or an interruption, but rain does not automatically mean a game will be postponed. The decision depends on conditions and the circumstances of the game. MLB’s official glossary identifies weather as the most frequent cause of a suspended game in a particular situation: when the game is tied or the visiting team has taken the lead in an inning. A stadium technical malfunction is another, less common cause of suspension. MLB’s suspended-game glossary explains the defined situation.
For a game that has not started, MLB’s universal ground rules say the home team judges whether unsuitable weather or field conditions mean play should not begin. The exception is the second game of a doubleheader, when the umpire-in-chief of the first game makes that call. See the official MLB ground rules.
Delay, suspension and postponement mean different things
| Status | What it means | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed | The scheduled start is late, or play has paused. The game may still happen or resume that day; a delay alone does not confirm when. | Keep checking the game’s current status for a restart update. |
| Suspended | Play stopped before the game was completed. It must be completed later from the point where it ended, although not every terminated game becomes a suspended game. | Look for official information about when and where the remaining play will take place. |
| Postponed | The game will not continue at that time and is rescheduled for another date. | The MLB listing or club announcement may provide the makeup date. |
These are not interchangeable labels. MLB’s glossary defines a suspended game as one that must be completed later from the point of termination. A postponement, by contrast, moves the scheduled game to another date. For example, MLB’s April 30, 2026 media-center listing labeled Giants–Phillies “Postponed — Rain” and gave April 30 as the makeup date. That listing illustrates a specific event; it does not establish a universal rescheduling rule.

How to check whether the game will resume
- Open the game’s official MLB scoreboard listing. Look for a status change, a restart update or a makeup date. A general weather forecast cannot tell you the game’s official status.
- Check both clubs’ official channels. The teams may publish event-specific updates as decisions are made.
- Recheck the listing before making plans. Do not assume a particular restart time or that a postponed game will be played that night.
How to keep following the game
Your options depend on where you are, whether the game is in or out of market, the applicable viewing rights and whether the game is still live or has concluded. Check the game’s current listing and the provider’s terms for your location rather than assuming that a subscription carries every live game.
| Option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live video | The game is available to stream and you want to watch play. | MLB says MLB.TV subscribers can watch live out-of-market games, but blackouts may apply. Check the listing for the game and your territory. Distribution can vary by club. |
| Live audio | You want to follow while away from a screen or video is unavailable. | MLB’s Android help page notes that At Bat live audio may be silent during a rain delay or commercials. Silence by itself does not mean the game was canceled. |
| Archive | The game has concluded and you want to watch it later. | MLB’s schedule page currently says on-demand archives are available 90 minutes after each game concludes. Check the game listing for current availability. |
MLB’s live-streaming help center covers viewing access and archives. Its 2026 viewing guide describes club-specific in-market streaming options and app access; availability depends on the team and location. As of March 10, 2026, MLB said 22 of its 30 clubs had in-market, blackout-free streaming subscriptions available. That is a season-specific figure, not a permanent count.
