In NHL injury reports, day to day means the return timeline is unsettled, questionable means the player’s availability for a particular upcoming game is uncertain, and out or will not play means the player will miss the game being discussed. These are descriptive reporting phrases, not rungs on a league-wide scale with fixed definitions or odds.
What each NHL status term means
| Term | Time reference | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Day to day | Ongoing short-term reassessment | The return timeline is unsettled; it is not a promise of a return tomorrow. |
| Questionable | A named upcoming game | The player’s participation in that game is uncertain. |
| Out / will not play | The game being discussed | The player will not participate in that game; the report may not establish how long the absence will last. |
This is a practical way to read NHL.com examples, not a formal NHL status chart. The league materials cited here do not assign these phrases fixed probability percentages.

Day to day: no firm return date
“Day to day” describes continued assessment, not a countdown of 24 or 48 hours. A player may be evaluated over several days while the team works out whether the absence will be brief or longer. In an NHL.com report, Winnipeg Jets general manager Daniel Brière said of Cam York, “At the moment it’s a day-to-day thing,” while explaining that the team was trying to determine whether the recovery might take two days, a week, or two weeks. NHL.com’s October 7, 2025 Status Report illustrates why the phrase should not be read as a return date.
Questionable: uncertain for a particular game
“Questionable” is useful only when you know which game the update refers to and when the report was made. It signals uncertainty about that game, not a guarantee of either playing or sitting out. NHL.com has used the word alongside “day to day”: discussing Brandon Hagel, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper said, “He is probably day to day right now,” and also described him as “probably doubtful for tomorrow night.” The April 2, 2026 Status Report shows how an ongoing injury description and a game-specific outlook can coexist.

Similarly, Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said Connor McDavid was “still day to day” and “still questionable for tomorrow” in NHL.com’s April 11, 2024 report. That is an example of overlapping language, not a universal rule that one term is more serious than the other.
Out or will not play: unavailable for the game cited
If a report says a player is out or will not play, treat that as non-availability for the game it names. It does not, by itself, predict the total length of the absence or establish that the player is on Injured Reserve. Look for a separate timeline or roster update if you need those details.

Are these terms a fixed NHL scale?
No NHL-wide glossary in the cited materials assigns “day to day,” “questionable,” and “out” fixed definitions or probability thresholds. The wording is best read in context: identify the game, note when the report was published, and distinguish an uncertain outlook from a confirmed scratch. Do not import definitions or percentages used by another league. The cited NHL.com reports do not establish an aggregate rate for how often players described as questionable or day to day ultimately play.
How Injured Reserve is different
Injured Reserve (IR) is a roster designation, not another synonym for an injury update. A player can be described as injured or day to day without being on IR. The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines say a player may be placed on IR when an injury, disability, or illness makes the player unable to perform; an injury that prevents play for at least seven days can qualify. Once placed, the player cannot compete for at least seven days. Those roster rules are separate from a report’s game-specific availability wording.

Will a day-to-day player play tonight?
The label alone cannot answer that. Check the latest team or NHL.com update for the specific game and its publication time. A later report may clarify whether the player is available, questionable, or out; older wording can be overtaken by a new evaluation. For a fantasy lineup or game-night decision, treat “questionable” as unresolved until the club confirms availability, and do not interpret “day to day” as an automatic yes or no.
