The Wild Card Series is a best-of-three opening round; the Division Series is a best-of-five second round. In each league, the No. 3 seed plays No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5, while the top two seeds skip the Wild Card round and enter the Division Series. MLB’s current format has 12 playoff teams—six from each league.
How the 12-team playoff field is built
Each league sends six teams to the postseason: its three division winners and three Wild Card teams, as set out in MLB’s official format FAQ. The division winners are seeded first, second and third according to record; the three Wild Cards fill seeds four through six. A Wild Card team does not become a division winner seed by finishing with a better record than a division champion.
The two division winners with the best records receive first-round byes and advance directly to the Division Series. The third division winner joins the three Wild Cards in the Wild Card Series. That is why the round’s name does not mean every participant is a Wild Card team.

How the bracket advances
Wild Card matchups
In each league, No. 3 faces No. 6, and No. 4 faces No. 5. Each matchup is a best-of-three, with the higher seed hosting every game. The top two seeds are not involved; they wait for the Division Series.
Division Series matchups
The bracket is fixed rather than reseeded after the Wild Card round. The winner of the No. 3–No. 6 series plays No. 2; the winner of No. 4–No. 5 plays No. 1. A team’s record does not reshuffle those pairings once the Wild Card Series ends.

Each Division Series is a best-of-five. Under the 2-2-1 home arrangement, the higher seed hosts the first two games and, if the series reaches a fifth game, hosts that game as well.
Why some familiar playoff terms can be confusing
There is no current single-game Wild Card Game in this format: the opening round is a series of up to three games. MLB’s postseason history traces changes to the system, including the addition of a second Wild Card in 2012 and the best-of-three Wild Card Series used in the expanded 2020 postseason. The current 12-team field dates to the 2022 expansion, with three Wild Cards per league, as MLB’s postseason history and its current format FAQ describe.
