The NFL has a leaguewide process that separates weekly practice participation from a player’s anticipated game availability. College football does not have one equivalent NCAA-wide weekly public schedule: reporting depends on the conference or postseason policy governing a particular game. That distinction determines which teams are covered, when reports appear, and what a designation means.
Why NFL and college reports work differently
The NFL’s Personnel (Injury) Report Policy applies to clubs across the league. It calls for practice reports during the week and a separate game-status report, with deadlines tied to the scheduled game day. The practice report records injury status and participation level; the game-status report communicates anticipated availability for the next game. NFL Football Operations’ current schedule and its Personnel (Injury) Report Policy set out those requirements.
College football availability reporting is policy-dependent. A conference may require reports for games between its members, while the College Football Playoff sets a separate rule for playoff games. Those examples do not create one schedule for every college team or contest. The NCAA’s football rules page is a playing-rules resource, not a weekly public availability-report policy; its 2026 March Madness reporting pilot concerns Division I basketball, not football. What the policies cover—and when reports arrive
These schedules apply only within their stated scope and season. Check the current policy for the game in question before relying on a deadline.

| Policy | Games covered | Reporting schedule |
|---|---|---|
| NFL policy and schedule | NFL clubs leaguewide | Practice reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice, on days determined by the game schedule. A separate game-status report has its own game-day-dependent deadline. Teams must update the report if a player’s condition changes after the initial status report. NFL Football Operations |
| SEC | SEC conference games | For a Saturday game, reporting begins three days before kickoff, continues with daily updates, and concludes with a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Reporting days shift for games played on other days. SEC announcement |
| Big Ten (2026 process) | Competition against conference opponents | Four reports per week, beginning three days before the contest and concluding with a game-day report. Big Ten announcement, August 28, 2026 |
| Big 12 | Big 12 conference football games | Updates over the days before a game, with a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Big 12 policy |
| College Football Playoff (2025–26 season) | Each CFP game | Reports begin three days before a game, update daily, and conclude with a final report 90 minutes before game time. CFP policy |
The conference and playoff deadlines are not interchangeable. For example, a conference policy may cover only conference games, while the CFP policy applies to participating schools’ playoff games. Do not assume either one governs a team’s nonconference regular-season games.

NFL: practice participation and game status are separate
An NFL practice report describes participation in practice and injury status; the later game-status report addresses anticipated availability. A practice participation entry is therefore not itself the player’s final game designation. Consult the NFL policy for the applicable status definitions rather than mapping labels from a college report onto NFL terminology. NFL Personnel (Injury) Report Policy

College: availability is not necessarily a medical diagnosis
Conference and CFP policies use their own reporting designations, and their definitions can differ. The Big 12 describes availability broadly enough to include reasons other than injury, such as illness, suspension, eligibility, legal issues, or personal matters. A player’s appearance on an availability report does not, by itself, establish a specific injury or diagnosis. Big 12 policy
The CFP’s 2025–26 policy also changes its labels on game day: before game day, designations are available, probable, questionable, doubtful, or out; on game day, they are available, game time decision, or out. Those terms belong to that CFP policy and should not be assumed to match a conference’s or the NFL’s definitions. CFP policy

How to check a report without misreading it
- Identify the competition. Determine whether the game is an NFL game, a conference matchup, or a CFP game.
- Find the governing policy. Use the applicable league, conference, or CFP policy; a team’s conference affiliation alone does not mean every game is covered.
- Check the season and final update time. Policies and schedules can change. A preliminary report is not necessarily the final game-day report.
- Read the designation in context. Confirm the policy’s definitions, and do not treat an availability status as a medical diagnosis unless the source explicitly provides one.
