What Is the Difference Between Full, Limited, and No Practice in the NFL?

NFL practice-report labels measure a player’s share of normal repetitions: zero percent, less than 100 percent, or all of them. They do not by themselves determine game availability.

On an NFL injury report, practice participation measures how much of a player’s normal practice workload he completed: full means 100 percent, limited means less than 100 percent, and did not participate means zero percent. These labels describe practice work—not whether the player will be available for the game.

How the three practice labels are defined

The NFL measures participation against a player’s normal repetitions in both individual drills and the team portion of practice. Its Injury Report Policy defines the categories as follows:

Report label Share of normal repetitions What it means
Did Not Participate 0 percent The player completed none of his normal repetitions.
Limited Participation Less than 100 percent The player completed some, but not all, of his normal repetitions.
Full Participation 100 percent The player completed all of his normal repetitions.

For example, a player who takes part in individual drills but misses the team portion is limited if that falls short of his normal workload. Appearing on a scout team does not necessarily change the label if medical restrictions kept him from the repetitions he would normally take as a starter.

Practice participation is not game availability

A participation label records what a player did in practice; a game-status designation addresses whether he is expected to play. The distinction matters: the NFL’s 2016 policy announcement described a player as Questionable when it was uncertain whether he would play, Doubtful when he was unlikely to participate, and Out when he would not play. The announcement also removed Probable, noting that approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years had played. That figure was the league’s historical rationale for the change, not a current forecast for any individual player. See the NFL’s 2016 announcement on injury-report revisions.

  • Quarterback Design: Designed by an NFL Quarterback Kurt Benkert, using insights from his professional football preparation and film study. This notebook will help you design plays that can be easily understood and executed on the field.
  • 50 Double-Sided Play Design Pages: The playbook is designed with plenty of room to sketch formations, routes, coverages, and game plans.
  • Premium Hard Cover: The notebook's durable construction is built to hold up through practices, meetings, and travel. Unlike paperback playbooks, this notebook will help coaches and players all season long.
  • Tear-Out Pages: The pages are designed to be ripped out for easy sharing with players and other coaches. Bring your play designs to the field or film room.
  • Players and Coaching Staff: The playbook is a perfect fit for coaches, QBs & football fans. From Pop Warner and flag football to high school and weekend leagues, the playbook can help with strategy building, quarterback training, film study, or designing your own team's playbook.

One official Patriots injury report example displays daily practice participation separately from game status; it includes a player listed as full in practice and Questionable for the game. Treat it as an illustration of the separate fields, not as the policy itself.

How to read reports for walk-throughs and non-injury absences

Walk-throughs and days off

If a walk-through or a day off falls on a normal reporting day, clubs still submit an injury report. The NFL policy directs teams to assign the category that reflects the participation the player would have had in a regular practice and to mark it as an estimate. An estimated category is therefore not a record of repetitions completed in a conventional practice.

“Not Injury Related”

“Not Injury Related” is an explanation for an absence or restriction, not an injury diagnosis. The policy gives examples including veteran rest, team discipline, jury duty, illness in the family, and a personal matter; clubs should explain the reason on their participation release. Read that explanation separately from the player’s injury-related practice status.
