Check the latest team update and, when available, the final inactive list; then compare his likely role with a replacement you can still add to your lineup before the relevant lock.
What “Questionable” tells you—and what it doesn’t
The designation signals uncertainty. It does not make the start/sit decision for you or give a reliable percentage chance that the quarterback will play. NFL Fantasy’s older explainer described Q as uncertain and likely to be a game-time decision, but a live decision should be based on current reporting, not an old explanation of the label: NFL Fantasy’s injury-designation explainer.
Practice labels such as did not participate, limited, or full participation are useful context, not a guarantee of Sunday availability. Look for the latest team or player update and whether credible current reporting describes a likely limitation.
Check availability and workload separately
An “active” status answers whether the player is available to play; it does not guarantee a normal workload. A quarterback may be active but face a reported snap, pitch, or workload restriction. Weigh that possibility against the replacement’s expected starting role and opportunity rather than treating active status as an automatic start.

Where applicable, NFL inactive lists are generally reported around 90 minutes before kickoff. That is a practical reporting window, not a universal fantasy-platform deadline. Follow current team announcements and your platform’s status information, and do not wait for inactives if doing so could lock your alternative first.
Make sure your replacement is still eligible
Fantasy platforms and league settings control when a player locks. NFL.com’s 2025 Official Rules allow status changes only before the player’s NFL team is scheduled to start in that system; NFL.com’s general guide uses a five-minutes-before-kickoff lock in its examples. Those are NFL.com mechanics, not rules for every platform or custom league. Check your own league’s lineup-lock settings and the player’s game time before relying on a late swap.

This matters most when your starter plays late. An early-game backup may already be locked by the time the starter is declared inactive, leaving you unable to make the pivot. If the replacement is a free agent, you may also need to complete an add—and any required roster drop—before the relevant deadline.
Compare the real options before choosing
If you have more than one possible replacement, compare the factors that can change the decision. A projection is an estimate, not a guarantee.

NFL.com’s Official Rules 2025 explain that site’s waiver, free-agent, and lineup mechanics. Use your own platform’s rules for a different service or a customized league.
A practical decision sequence
- Get the latest status. Check current team or player updates and trustworthy reporting. Treat practice participation as context, not a final availability ruling.
- Identify viable backups. Check quarterbacks already on your roster and those available through waivers or free agency. Confirm that an add, roster drop, waiver claim, or FAAB bid can be completed in time.
- Compare role and risk. Weigh the questionable starter’s likely workload against each replacement’s expected opportunity, matchup, and fit with your league’s scoring.
- Check both kickoff times and locks. Confirm when the relevant players’ games start and when your platform locks them. Do not rely on an early-playing backup as late insurance if he will be locked before you know the starter’s status.
- Set the lineup before the first relevant lock. If you cannot wait safely for the inactive list, make the choice using the best current information and the replacement you can still use.
Why there is no one-size-fits-all answer
The right move depends on the quarterback, the latest news, available replacements, your scoring format, and the platform and league rules. Without those details, no player-specific start/sit recommendation is established. For a live decision, current team information and your league’s actual lock settings matter more than a general rule about the Questionable tag.
