The team named Colson its 2026 starter, and a September preview identified Raymond Moore III as the backup and reported that he played against Oklahoma—but it did not say his appearance followed an injury. That distinction matters: a depth-chart role, a player entering a game, and a medical decision about whether someone can play are separate things.
Has UTEP reported an injury to EJ Colson Jr.?
No injury, diagnosis, treatment, clearance decision, or expected return date for Colson is established by the cited public reporting. UTEP announced him as its 2026 starting quarterback on May 4, 2026. Its September 10 preview later called Raymond Moore III the backup and described Moore’s game action against Oklahoma, without connecting that appearance to a Colson injury. See UTEP’s starter announcement and September preview.
As a result, the available information supports a description of UTEP’s reported quarterback roles and general sports-medicine responsibilities, not an account of a specific injury or a prediction about Colson’s availability.
Who is UTEP’s backup quarterback?
UTEP’s September 10, 2026 preview identified Moore as the backup. It also reported his first action as a Miner came against Oklahoma: he completed 3 of 5 passes for 26 yards and ran nine times for 49 yards. Those figures establish reported game experience, not why he entered or whether Colson was hurt.

The live 2026 UTEP roster, accessed October 4, 2026, lists Colson, Moore, Bodey Weaver, Chad Warner, and Braesen Leon at quarterback. A roster confirms who is listed at the position; by itself, it does not establish the game-week order behind the starter.
How to read the available depth information
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| UTEP’s May 4 starter announcement | Colson was named the 2026 starter. | His later injury status or availability. |
| UTEP’s September 10 preview | Moore was identified as backup and had appeared against Oklahoma. | That Moore entered because of a Colson injury. |
| UTEP’s live roster, accessed October 4 | Five players were listed at quarterback. | A complete game-week depth chart or medical status. |
| Dave Campbell’s Texas Football spring preview, April 30 | Moore appeared to be the backup, with Warner and Weaver in the mix, in spring reporting. | A current official game-week order. The report is a projection, not a UTEP depth-chart announcement. |
UTEP’s September 3 season preview described a different opening starter in each of the prior two seasons: Skyler Locklear received the 2024 opening nod, and Malachi Nelson got the 2025 call, before Colson became the 2026 newcomer under center. That is a change in season-opening starters, not evidence of injury replacements. The details appear in UTEP’s 2026 season preview.

What happens if a starting quarterback cannot play?
At the football level, the reported 2026 information identifies Moore as UTEP’s backup, so he is the clearest documented next option in that reporting. Moore’s Oklahoma appearance also shows he has game experience. The roster lists other quarterbacks, but the available sources do not confirm their order as substitutes for a particular game.
A coach’s substitution and a medical determination are not interchangeable. A backup can enter a game for many reasons; an appearance alone cannot establish that the starter was injured. Nor does a player’s place on a roster or depth chart establish that he is medically cleared to return. UTEP’s published material does not detail a current, step-by-step football quarterback protocol or a case-specific decision for Colson.

What does UTEP say about injury care?
UTEP Sports Medicine’s department page, published June 7, 2017, describes certified athletic trainers as primary caregivers for student-athletes and says they coordinate with team physicians. The department lists injury prevention, recognition, evaluation and assessment, emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning among its responsibilities. It states that trainers and team physicians work to return injured athletes to sport “as quickly and safely as possible.” This is UTEP’s general description of its sports-medicine remit, not a current quarterback-specific protocol or a report about Colson. Read the UTEP Sports Medicine page.

There is no responsible timeline to give without an identified injury and a medical update. UTEP’s cited public reporting provides no statistic for quarterback injury incidence, average recovery time, or injury-related replacement outcomes. Recovery depends on the individual situation, and the published department description does not supply a schedule.

One UTEP recovery example—not a forecast
In a September 26, 2026 feature, UTEP described wide receiver Kam Thomas’s return after a season-ending injury one game into the 2025 season. Thomas worked for months, experienced progress that was slower than hoped and self-doubt, and played again in 2026. He said, “This past year has been hard mentally, especially dealing with the injury.” That is one player’s account, not medical guidance or a basis for estimating a quarterback’s recovery. The feature is available from UTEP.
