The phrase describes the timing and outcome of a lineup change—not its cause or how soon the player will return.
What “late scratch” means
A late scratch is a player who is taken out of the lineup shortly before a game and does not appear in it. “Late” signals that the change happened near game time; it does not require that the player missed warmups. The Florida Panthers, for example, reported that Gustav Forsling took part in warmups but did not play. The Panthers’ account describes the circumstances.
The expression is used in hockey reporting to describe a last-minute lineup change. The available examples do not establish it as a formal NHL rulebook definition or roster designation.
Does a late scratch mean the player is injured?
Not necessarily. The phrase alone does not identify why the player was held out. A report may state an injury as the reason: an NHL.com status report described a player as a late scratch after warmups and separately attributed the absence to an upper-body injury. That status report makes the distinction clear.

In Forsling’s case, Panthers coach Paul Maurice said the player felt pretty good but the team wanted to give him another day without contact. The explanation shows that a scratch can be a precautionary decision; it does not make “late scratch” itself a diagnosis.

No. The label only says the player did not play in the game from which they were scratched. It does not, by itself, predict when they will return. Look for a separate update about availability: NHL reporting may describe a player as “day to day,” while a Panthers preview described Forsling as a “game-time decision” for a subsequent matchup after an earlier late scratch. The Panthers preview treats the later status as a distinct update.

How to read a late-scratch report
- Timing and outcome: The player was removed close to game time and did not play.
- Reason: Check whether the report separately gives an injury, a coaching decision, or another explanation. If it does not, the term alone does not supply one.
- What happens next: Use a later availability update—not the scratch label—to judge whether the player is expected to miss another game.
