Ben Simmons’s best route to fitting alongside Sacramento’s guards is to help without monopolizing the ball: make defenders pay for leaving him open, cut and screen with purpose, finish transition chances, and move the ball quickly when help arrives. His 6-foot-10 frame also gives the Kings a potential option to defend larger perimeter players and support smaller guards. Those are tactical priorities, not proof that the fit has already worked in games.
Why the fit depends on more than who handles the ball
Sacramento’s 2026–27 roster lists Simmons as a 6-foot-10, 240-pound guard-forward alongside guards including Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, Darius Acuff Jr., Elfrid Payton, Nique Clifford, Tristen Newton, Adam Flagler, and Emanuel Sharp. Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and De’Andre Hunter are among the listed frontcourt players. With several guards available, the question is not simply whether Simmons can initiate an offense. It is whether he can contribute when another guard has the ball, without crowding the space that guard needs to attack.
NBA.com lists Simmons’s 2024–25 regular-season averages at 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 22.0 minutes per game across 51 appearances, including 24 starts. That line supports viewing him as a potential passer and connector as well as a scorer; it does not tell us how effective he will be in Sacramento’s lineups. The Kings say he missed the 2025–26 season, so the older numbers are context rather than a forecast of his next season.
What Simmons should improve on offense
Make defenders respect him away from the ball
The central strategic need is a repeatable scoring threat outside the paint. If an opponent can leave Simmons to help in the lane, that defender can obstruct drives by LaVine, Monk, Acuff, or another guard. Making open shots often enough to demand a closer contest would make that help more costly and give Sacramento’s ballhandlers more room.

The available season line does not establish Simmons’s current shooting percentages, shot locations, or practice results. The point is the role requirement: opponents must have a reason not to ignore him, rather than assuming a particular shooting flaw or claiming a specific improvement.
Turn defensive attention into cuts, screens, and finishes
When a defender turns toward the ball, Simmons can cut behind that player, screen for a guard, or seal a smaller defender near the basket. He can also run the floor in transition for chances before the defense is set. These actions let him contribute without asking for another guard’s possessions, but they depend on decisive timing and reliable finishing.

Be a quick-reading secondary playmaker
Simmons’s 5.6 assists per game in 2024–25 make passing a plausible part of his role, but the useful version beside multiple guards is often connective rather than ball-dominant. He can advance the ball in transition, make a short-roll pass after screening, or move it promptly when a defense collapses. He should avoid holding it in the same areas where Sacramento’s guards need to create.
How his defense could complement the guards
At his listed size, Simmons has the frame to take some assignments on larger wings, switch selectively, rebound from the perimeter, and help near the rim when a smaller guard is beaten. That gives coach Doug Christie a possible way to pair a larger perimeter defender with smaller creators.

The Kings report that Simmons missed the 2025–26 season. That makes availability and role continuity essential to evaluating any projection, but the team-page material does not establish a medical cause, recovery timeline, or readiness level. Christie praised Simmons during camp, saying, “Nothing I read was true,” and that he enjoys being around him, adding that Simmons speaks, enjoys basketball, loves coaching, and is “special.” The Kings page published the comment on October 1, 2026; a positive camp comment is not the same as evidence from NBA games or confirmation of a defined rotation role.

What to watch when Sacramento plays
Once games provide evidence, judge the fit through possessions and lineups rather than reputation or an isolated box score:
- Defender positioning: Do opponents guard Simmons beyond the paint, or use him as a free helper?
- Driving space: Do Sacramento’s guards have clear lanes when Simmons shares the floor with them?
- Off-ball action: Do his cuts and screens create open shots, rim attempts, or defensive rotations?
- Ball movement: When Simmons handles, does he make quick reads without unnecessary turnovers or slowing a guard’s attack?
- Defensive role: Which larger perimeter players does he guard, and how do those lineups function defensively?
- Continuity: Is he available often enough for the team to build and sustain a role?
The official roster and historical season line do not provide a settled 2026–27 rotation or a validated lineup sample for these tests. Early-season minutes, availability, current shooting, and actual lineup use will determine how much of the proposed fit becomes reality.
