College football has no single report schedule or universal status glossary: labels, deadlines and rules about unlisted players can differ by league, season and game.
What does questionable mean on a college football injury report?
“Questionable” means the player’s availability is uncertain under the policy that issued the report. It is not a diagnosis, a confirmed scratch or a guarantee that the player will take the field. The meaning can also depend on whether the label appears on a midweek report or a game-day report.
Some conferences attach percentage figures to their pregame labels. The Big 12’s 2025–26 policy uses 50% for Questionable, while the SEC’s 2025–26 regulations also define it as 50%. Those figures are policy shorthand, not clinical probabilities or independent predictions of what an individual player will do. See the Big 12 availability policy and the SEC Commissioner’s Regulations.
Common labels and what they indicate

- Available: The policy generally indicates that a player is available to dress and play. It does not specify a starting role or workload.
- Probable: Expected or likely to play under policies that use the term. The Big 12 and SEC define it as 75% in their pregame systems.
- Questionable: Uncertain to play; the Big 12 and SEC assign a 50% policy figure.
- Doubtful: Unlikely to play; the Big 12 and SEC assign a 25% policy figure.
- Out: The player will not play according to that report. It does not necessarily mean the reason is an injury.
- Game Time Decision: The report leaves the decision unresolved. Under the SEC definition, coaches or medical personnel evaluate the athlete in pregame warmups; the label does not promise participation.
- Out (1st Half): A separate category in the Big Ten’s 2026 reports. Do not treat it as full-game unavailability.
The Big 12 and SEC also define Available as 100% in their pregame systems. These percentages belong to those policies and should not be read as observed participation rates.
When do college football injury reports come out?

Does out mean a player is injured?
No. “Out” says the player is unavailable under the applicable report, not why. The SEC policy allows unavailability for reasons beyond injury, including illness, suspension, eligibility or personal matters. A public status should not be treated as a medical diagnosis.

If a player isn’t listed, are they available?
There is no universal rule for an unlisted name. The Big Ten’s 2026 announcement says, “Student-athletes not listed on a report are considered Available.” That rule applies within the report’s scope, which is limited to conference competition and defines which visiting players are included. The SEC regulations recognize exemptions for some athletes not expected to play or who appear only infrequently. Check the relevant policy before drawing conclusions from an omission.

An availability label does not establish whether a player will start, how many snaps they will play or who will replace them. A report is a published status snapshot, not a lineup card. A player marked Available can have a limited role, while a Game Time Decision remains unresolved until the stated evaluation takes place.

For a useful comparison between reports, check these details rather than treating labels from different leagues as interchangeable:
- Report timestamp and time remaining before kickoff.
- The governing conference or competition and the season-specific policy.
- Whether the label is midweek or game-day terminology.
- Whether the player is covered by the report or an exemption applies.
- Whether a later official update changes the status.
For conference-specific rules, the SEC says, “Acts of gamesmanship intended to hide a student-athlete’s participation status for competitive or strategic reasons are prohibited.” That provision does not make every report a guarantee about a player’s eventual role or playing time.
