Do not play sports with an active broken wrist unless the clinician treating it has specifically cleared you. A cast, splint, or brace is part of fracture care, not proof that the wrist is safe for sport. Ask your fracture clinic, doctor, or physiotherapist when and how to return; the answer depends on the fracture, treatment, recovery, and sport.

Can you play sports with a broken wrist?

Usually, you should pause sport while the fracture is healing unless your treating clinician gives you specific instructions that say otherwise. A support may limit movement or help manage the injury, but it cannot eliminate the risk of a fall, collision, or force being transmitted through the wrist.

Contact and non-contact activities carry different risks, but “non-contact” does not automatically mean safe: a fall or sudden wrist movement can still injure a healing fracture. Do not use a retail brace, extra padding, or a cast cover as a workaround for medical advice.

How to protect your wrist while it heals

  • Follow the treatment plan. Wear the cast, removable splint, or other support as directed. Do not remove or alter it for sport unless your clinician tells you to.
  • Keep the rest of the arm moving as instructed. Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust advises moving the fingers, elbow, and shoulder while the wrist is casted, then increasing activity gradually after cast removal: What to expect after a wrist fracture.
  • Ask before exercising the injured wrist. Exercises and loading should match the stage of healing and the advice from your fracture clinic or therapist.
  • Do not treat reduced pain as clearance. Use the clinician’s return-to-activity plan rather than deciding that the wrist is ready because it feels better.

When can you return to sports after a wrist fracture?

There is no single return date that applies to every broken wrist. NHS patient guidance illustrates why individualized advice matters: Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust says contact sport should wait until 12 weeks after injury, while Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust says to avoid contact sport until symptom-free and notes that this is unlikely within the first 8 weeks. These are recommendations from particular services, not universal deadlines.

Guidance for other activities also varies. Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust advises waiting for full strength and range of movement before returning to active hobbies and describes gradual, sport-specific practice from around 6 weeks in its recovery guidance. Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust advises avoiding sports and heavy lifting for at least 12 weeks, possibly longer depending on the injury. Follow the plan for your own fracture rather than selecting the earliest timeline.

Guidance source and context What it says
Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, adult distal-radius fracture managed conservatively, May 2023 Wait 12 weeks before contact sport; other sports may be considered earlier on advice from a doctor or physiotherapist. Patient guidance
Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, simple wrist fracture Do not play contact sport until symptom-free; the page says this is unlikely within the first 8 weeks. Discharge advice
Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, distal-radius fracture recovery guidance Wait for full strength and range of movement before active hobbies; gradual sport-specific practice may begin around 6 weeks in the described guidance. Healing and recovery advice
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, wrist fractures Avoid sports and heavy lifting for at least 12 weeks, possibly longer depending on the injury. Fracture clinic guidance

What needs to be considered before returning

  • The fracture pattern, stability, and how it is being treated, including whether the plan involves a cast, removable splint, or surgery.
  • The sport’s demands and risks, especially falls, collisions, gripping, and weight-bearing through the hand.
  • Your functional recovery and symptoms, alongside the clinician’s assessment and advice.

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust describes a staged rehabilitation approach, with sport-tailored exercises in a later strengthening phase and guidance from a therapist or consultant: Wrist fracture rehabilitation. If you are unsure whether an activity is allowed, check with the clinician managing the fracture before trying it.

What if the injured person is a child?

Children’s timelines are not interchangeable with adult guidance, and recommendations for one fracture type should not be generalized to others. University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust says most children with the specific Salter-Harris wrist fracture covered by its guidance can return to full sports at 4–6 weeks after injury, while noting a small increased injury risk up to 12 weeks. Its page also says non-contact swimming may start when comfortable and out of the cast. These instructions apply to that specific pediatric injury; a child’s fracture clinic should advise on their own case: Salter-Harris wrist fracture guidance.
