You do not have to start with FINAL FANTASY I or play the numbered games in order. Square Enix presents the numbered entries as distinct adventures with different settings and play styles, so choose by the combat and story structure you want—and check whether a game is an online service or one chapter of a larger story before you buy.
Do you need to play Final Fantasy in order?
No. Square Enix’s official series portal lists numbered entries from FINAL FANTASY I through FINAL FANTASY XVI, but the numbered series is not one continuous campaign. You can choose an entry based on its own setting, characters, and gameplay rather than treating the Roman numerals as a required sequence.

There are exceptions to that general rule: some games belong to a continuing online service, and the FINAL FANTASY VII remake is a multi-game project. Check the structure of a specific game before assuming it is a self-contained purchase.
Which Final Fantasy should you buy first?

For the expanded remake edition, Square Enix announced FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE for PS5 and later announced expansion to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S / Xbox on PC, with that expansion dated January 22, 2026. How much does combat style matter?
It matters because gameplay varies across Final Fantasy titles and spin-offs. If you specifically want classic or more tactical RPG combat, verify that the particular entry suits you rather than assuming all numbered games play alike. The available examples establish variety but do not support a complete title-by-title combat taxonomy.
Square Enix’s beginner guide to spin-offs, dated July 12, 2024, recommends options by characteristics such as challenging action, crafting, multiplayer, and rhythm gameplay. Use those descriptions to narrow a choice, then read the individual game listing for its current platform and edition.

What makes Final Fantasy XIV different?
FINAL FANTASY XIV is an online MMORPG rather than a conventional one-off adventure. That means online play and the game’s current access and service terms are part of the buying decision. Square Enix’s beginner announcement was published August 8, 2022; its trial details should not be treated as a current offer without checking the official service information.
Is the Final Fantasy VII remake a complete story?
No single purchase of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE contains the whole remake project. Square Enix describes that project as a reimagining into three standalone titles; INTERGRADE is an expanded edition of the opening game. It can suit someone who wants a modern action-RPG beginning, provided they are comfortable with a story designed to continue across multiple releases.

Check platform, edition, and release status before paying
Availability is title-specific and changes over time. The official platform announcements illustrate why it is worth checking the exact console or PC storefront rather than relying on a series-wide assumption. Physical stock, digital editions, and service terms can also differ by region.
One newly announced release needs a date check: Square Enix’s September 9, 2026 announcement gave FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE an October 22, 2026 launch date for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and said its free demo supported save transfer. That date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026, so verify whether it has launched and whether the demo and platforms remain available when you read this. Square Enix announcement.
