Yes—if the gamer is an adult with a soft spot for the original PlayStation or enjoys LEGO display builds. Set 72306 recreates the console and its first controller at nearly 1:1 scale, with two game-inspired mini-scenes. It is a display model, not a working console, so it is a much weaker choice for someone who wants to play games, dislikes building, or needs a compact, lower-cost gift.
What you get in LEGO PlayStation 72306
The 1,911-piece set builds a near life-size replica of the original PlayStation and its first controller. The controller plugs into the console, and the model’s Open and Power buttons are functional tactile features. LEGO lists the build for ages 18 and up. LEGO’s product listing describes the set and its specifications.
Two removable or concealable dioramas add references to PlayStation games: a miniature Gran Turismo track with cars and an Ape Escape scene featuring a red or blue monkey helmet. They can be displayed beside the console. The LEGO Builder app also provides 3D instructions that can be zoomed and rotated, plus tools to save and track building progress.
Who is it a good gift for?
Strong match: original PlayStation fans and display-builders
- Someone nostalgic for the original PlayStation era. The console-and-controller replica is the main attraction, while the game scenes add recognizable details.
- A gamer who likes LEGO as much as gaming. This is a substantial build intended for display, not a game to play.
- A collector or décor-minded fan. The near 1:1 scale and recognizable shape make it a potential conversation piece for a gaming room, desk, or office—if there is room to show it.
Think twice: players first, builders second
- Someone expecting a playable console or included video game. It is a brick-built model, not electronics or a functioning PlayStation.
- A person who does not enjoy building. The set’s main activity is construction; the available information does not establish its build time or difficulty.
- A child or a budget-conscious recipient. LEGO’s age designation is 18+, and the announced list price places it in premium-gift territory.
- Someone short on display space. The UK merchandise listing gives approximate dimensions of 60 × 260 × 190 mm and approximate weight of 2.3 kg. Check the intended shelf or desk before buying. PlayStation’s UK merchandise page provides those measurements.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide before buying
- Check the recipient’s PlayStation connection. The most direct appeal is nostalgia for the original console; general interest in current games may not be enough.
- Ask whether they like building and displaying LEGO. If they mainly want something to play, choose a different gift.
- Measure the display spot. The listed dimensions are approximately 60 × 260 × 190 mm, and the UK page lists an approximate weight of 2.3 kg.
- Compare the local price with your budget. Treat the announced regional prices as recommended retail prices and verify what a seller currently charges.
There is no basis here to promise a particular build experience, construction time, or value relative to other sets. The decision is best made on fit: original PlayStation nostalgia, enjoyment of building, room to display it, and comfort with the price.
