Yes. Wordle answers and guesses can both contain the same letter more than once. The game scores each guessed copy against the number of copies in the answer, so a duplicate guess can show one positive tile and one gray tile when the answer contains that letter only once.
How repeated letters are scored
Each tile is evaluated against the hidden answer: green means the letter is correct in that position; yellow means the answer contains that letter elsewhere; gray means that guessed copy cannot match a remaining copy in the answer. The number of positive tiles for any letter cannot exceed the number of times that letter occurs in the answer.
For example, if the answer contains one A and your guess contains two As, only one guessed A can be green or yellow. The other A must be gray. If the answer contains two As, both guessed As may be positive, depending on where they appear.
What common duplicate-letter patterns tell you
Two positive tiles for the same letter
If both copies are green or yellow, the answer contains at least two copies of that letter. Their colors still matter: green marks a correct position, while yellow marks a copy that is present in a different position.

One positive tile and one gray duplicate
This pattern means one guessed copy matched an available copy in the answer, while the other had no remaining copy to match. For those repeated occurrences in that guess, the answer has only one copy of the letter.
One green and one yellow
The answer contains at least two copies: one is correctly placed, and another exists in a different position from its guessed tile.

How to use duplicate feedback while solving
- Count positive tiles for each letter. Green and yellow both establish that a copy is in the answer; two positive copies establish at least two occurrences.
- Read all copies in the guess together. A green or yellow tile does not, by itself, rule out another copy. But a gray duplicate after a positive copy is evidence that the answer does not have another copy available for that guessed occurrence.
- Keep tracking positions. A repeated letter can be present even when one guessed position is wrong, and one copy can be green while another is yellow.
The official instructions for the physical Wordle party game make the same practical point: “Watch out for those sneaky double letters. Just because a letter is green or yellow doesn’t mean it won’t appear again.” That booklet concerns the tabletop edition; it supports the duplicate-letter principle, but is not a complete specification of the NYT website’s scoring system. TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 coverage also describes repeated-letter behavior in Wordle. Rules can differ in Wordle-like clones, so do not assume another game uses identical duplicate scoring.
