To make cobblestone repeatedly, channel flowing water and flowing lava so they meet at a controlled point, then mine the block that forms. Choose a simple trench if you have few resources, a hopper setup for easier collection, a piston line to move blocks into reach, or a TNT machine for automated breaking and collection. The fluid arrangement matters: the wrong contact can produce stone or obsidian instead of cobblestone.
How the fluids make cobblestone
Cobblestone farming works by repeatedly generating a block where water and lava meet; mining that block lets the interaction happen again. The outcome depends on which fluid is flowing and which is a source. The four-design guide from Beebom distinguishes flowing water over still lava, which makes obsidian; flowing lava touching still water, which makes stone; and flowing water meeting flowing lava, which makes cobblestone. The MC Guide Wiki guide, marked verified for Minecraft 1.21, also warns that water reaching the lava source can make obsidian and consume that source.
Keep the lava source out of the water channel and arrange the flows to meet only at the intended generation point. A nonflammable block above the mining point can help prevent drops from landing in lava and reduce the risk of falling into it, as described in the Minecraft Wiki cobblestone-farming tutorial.
Choose a design
| Design | Best for | Collection or mining | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple trench | Early-game or Skyblock starts | Mine the generated block by hand | Few resources and no redstone, but inefficient |
| Hopper collection | A more convenient pickup setup | Hoppers route output to a double chest; the player still mines the block | Requires several hoppers, stairs, and other materials |
| Piston mining line | Moving blocks into a comfortable mining position | Pistons push blocks into a line for the player to mine | Needs redstone; movement is automated, mining is not |
| TNT machine | Automated block breaking and collection | TNT breaks blocks and channels collect output | Most complex and resource-intensive; requires monitoring |
These trade-offs and material lists are described in Beebom’s guide. The designs are not interchangeable: the hopper setup improves collection, the piston line changes where blocks are presented for mining, and the TNT build automates breaking as well as collection.

1. Build a simple trench
This is the practical choice when you have limited inventory or need a basic source to expand a Skyblock island. Beebom’s version uses a four-block-long, one-block-wide, one-block-deep hole with a gap near one end. Water flows toward the gap, while lava is placed at the opposite end. The generated block forms at the controlled meeting point.
- Dig a one-block-wide trench four blocks long and one block deep, leaving a gap near one end as in the guide’s layout.
- Place water so it flows toward the gap.
- Place lava at the opposite end, keeping the source clear of the water flow.
- Mine the generated block at the meeting point and repeat as it regenerates.
Because this version is described as inefficient, it is most useful when low material cost matters more than output convenience.

- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features netherite armor, a mace, diamond pickaxe, gold sword, diamond helmet, crafting table, torch and a chest containing bread, bone and rotten flesh
2. Add hopper collection
The hopper design routes output above waterlogged stairs and through five hoppers into a double chest. It is presented as a stone generator as well as a cobblestone-generator option, so the block you produce depends on the fluid arrangement. For cobblestone, use the flowing-water-and-flowing-lava meeting described above rather than an arrangement that produces stone.
Beebom lists these materials: two water buckets, one lava bucket, five fire-resistant stairs, five hoppers, two chests, a sign, and solid fire-resistant blocks. The collection system is an added convenience, not a way to remove the need to mine the generated block in this design.

- MINECRAFT TOY FOR KIDS – The Nether Lava Battle is a small LEGO Minecraft set that provides big build-and-play fun for boys and girls 6 years old and older who play the popular video game
- PRETEND PLAY – This playset includes a buildable section of the Nether fortress bridge, and minifigures including Alex, a wither skeleton, plus blaze and strider LEGO Minecraft figures with weapons and accessories
- LEGO MINECRAFT FORTRESS ACTION – Players will need their skills to collect ancient debris, escape a lava fall, battle mobs and ride a Minecraft figure to safety

- FUN GIFT IDEAS – This hands-on video game set is a great birthday, holiday, or any-day treat for boys and girls who love small build-and-play toys packed with activity
- Build the generator’s fluid channels so the intended flows meet at the block-generation point.
- Place waterlogged stairs beneath the output area, following the guide’s layout.
- Connect five hoppers to carry the output into two chests joined as a double chest.
- Use the sign and solid fire-resistant blocks in the layout to contain the fluids and protect the collection area.
- Stand on the chest and mine the generated blocks; the hoppers route output toward the chest.
3. Make a piston mining line
This design uses pistons and a redstone circuit to push generated blocks into a line that is easier to mine from a standing position. It automates block movement, not the mining itself. Beebom lists two water buckets, one lava bucket, eight pistons, two redstone torches, a repeater, redstone dust, stairs, solid blocks, and a lever.
- Build the fluid generator and position the piston array so it can push newly generated blocks into the mining line.
- Wire the pistons with the redstone torches, repeater, and redstone dust in the guide’s circuit layout.
- Install the lever so you can switch the machine off.
- Activate the circuit and mine the blocks as they are moved into reach.
The guide describes this machine as slow but reliable. It can be expanded with additional modules or a collection system, but each addition increases the build’s material and redstone demands.

4. Build a TNT-based automatic machine
The advanced design combines pistons and observers with a TNT duplicator, hopper clock, and collection channels. Its long materials list includes pistons, sticky pistons, observers, target blocks, redstone components, slime blocks, TNT, obsidian, hoppers, and collection chests. It is intended to break and collect output, rather than simply present blocks for manual mining.
Beebom warns that the machine can malfunction if regular pistons reach their full push limit: the failure can delete the lava above. Build in the stated shutoff and monitor the piston line; stop and maintain the machine before it reaches that limit. This is a substantially more complex option than the trench, hopper, or mining-line builds.

Version and edition considerations
The cited guides do not establish current Java and Bedrock compatibility for all four designs. MC Guide Wiki’s mechanics guide is marked verified for Minecraft 1.21, while Beebom’s four-design page was updated October 15, 2025. A July 25, 2021 video claims its own simple design works in Java and Bedrock versions 1.16–1.20, but that dated claim does not establish support for current releases or for the advanced builds.
For edition-specific instructions, use a build guide that names your edition and game version; do not assume that a redstone-heavy design behaves identically across editions.
