Before starting Avowed, know that you do not need to settle on one class or follow every quest marker. Explore side routes, keep your equipment upgraded, mix abilities from different trees, and watch enemy attack tells. Those habits make the Living Lands easier to read without locking you into a single playstyle or spoiling the story.
Explore beyond the quest marker
Avowed’s open zones reward curiosity with treasure, lore, points of interest, and interactions that may begin even when no quest marker is visible. Xbox Wire’s February 2025 starter guide recommends investigating people and places that catch your attention rather than rushing from one main objective to the next. - Check balconies, underwater areas, and the space around waterfalls for hidden paths or rewards.
- Look for treasure maps and interpret the illustration: it points toward an area, not necessarily a precise marker. Listen for the treasure’s telltale sound as you search.
- Bounties and treasure hunts can give you a reason to explore away from the main route.
Upgrade gear before assuming you need more levels
The starter guide emphasizes equipment when preparing for harder quests: gear can matter more than your character level. Visit the workshop at Party Camp regularly and improve the equipment you rely on. Paradisan Ladder plants can be an early upgrade bottleneck; the guide notes that the minimap marks them. Interface details and balance can change with updates, so treat this as launch-era guidance rather than a guarantee about every current version.
The Journal’s skull ratings are rough danger signals, not formal level requirements: the guide describes no skull as manageable, one skull as potentially tough, and three skulls as a sign of especially dangerous enemies.

Mix ability trees instead of choosing a fixed class
Avowed is classless. Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard are ability trees to mix, not exclusive character classes. You can take useful abilities outside the tree that best matches your main approach; Xbox Wire specifically points to Ranger’s Parry passive as a possible early pick for a character leaning toward Fighter. The guide says you can reset your build by spending skeyts, so experimentation is an option rather than a one-way commitment.
Read combat tells and keep a second weapon setup ready
Combat is easier to manage when you recognize what enemies are about to do and have more than one response available. The February 2025 Xbox Wire guide describes these signals and mechanics:

- Red circle: An incoming unblockable attack; dodge rather than trying to block it.
- White diamond: While aiming a rifle, pistol, or bow, this marks a weak point.
- Dodge, block, and parry: These actions help build the stun meter.
You can quickly swap between two weapon setups. Consider pairing a close-range weapon with a ranged option, or keeping a magic setup ready as an alternative. The guide lists Y on controller and U on keyboard for the swap; key bindings are version-sensitive, so check the current controls if those inputs do not work.
Use stealth and the environment to change the fight
Charging through the obvious entrance is not your only option. The starter guide recommends using tall grass for stealth, explosive objects against enemy groups or fragile walls, and alternate windows or weak walls when you want to conserve lockpicks. It also notes that shooting down ice plants can create platforms. Look around before committing to a route: the environment may provide a shortcut, a way to avoid a fight, or an advantage in one.

Keep the Grimoire of Elements, even if magic is not your build
You receive a Grimoire of Elements for free at the start, and it can be useful even if you focus on melee or ranged weapons. In the guide’s examples, lightning activates an electronic switch and fire burns away cobwebs that conceal a shortcut. Choices can affect quest outcomes, settlements, individuals, groups, and companions, according to Obsidian staff interviewed by Xbox Wire. That does not mean every line of dialogue redirects the whole story. Game Director Carrie Patel described a goal of making consequences feel earned through foreshadowing and iteration, while also leaving room for outcomes players cannot predict completely. The four companions you encounter as the story progresses respond to your choices and quests. Their personal quests can connect to the main story, and decisions can affect whether they remain with you. Talk to them and notice their reactions; you can do that without trying to anticipate every consequence or treating each minor conversation as a decisive fork.
