Sony does not identify one orientation as cooler than the other.
PS5 Slim placement checklist
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console.
- Keep the side and rear vents clear of walls, shelves, fabric and nearby objects.
- Do not place the console on a carpet or rug with long fibres, or in a narrow, cramped space.
- Fit the correct support for the chosen orientation before use.
- Keep dust from building up in or around the vents.
Sony’s US support guidance gives the 10 cm clearance as a recommendation, not a tested temperature threshold or guarantee against overheating. Sony’s PS5 noise and ventilation guidance is general PS5 guidance; its setup instructions specifically identify CFI-2000 as the Slim model group.
Choose horizontal or vertical placement

Sony’s setup guide covers the PS5 Slim horizontal feet and stand; the vertical-stand attachment guide also includes CFI-2000 consoles. Both orientations are supported with their corresponding hardware. Sony’s guidance does not establish that either runs cooler.
Can you put a PS5 Slim in a cabinet?
Only if the location is not cramped and the vents remain unobstructed, with at least 10 cm of free space around each side. A tight shelf or enclosed compartment that blocks airflow conflicts with Sony’s placement guidance. Avoid covering the console with fabric, and do not use a long-fibre rug or carpet as its surface.

What to check if the PS5 fan is loud
A louder fan during some games or apps can be normal: Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. First check whether the console has the recommended clearance and whether anything is obstructing its vents. Fan noise by itself does not show that the console is defective.
Clean dust safely
- Switch off the PS5 and disconnect its AC cable before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust around the vents, as Sony recommends.
- Recheck the console’s placement and keep the vents clear afterward.
Sony’s noise guidance provides the cleaning instructions and airflow checks; it does not prescribe a temperature setting or claim that a particular orientation prevents fan noise.
