You can claim a digital entitlement for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs by inserting the disc into a disc-drive console and launching the game. It is not a universal conversion: eligibility depends on the specific disc, and Microsoft conditions the entitlement on continuing to possess that disc.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a disc-drive console. The claim process applies to supported game discs on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles. An Xbox Series S has no disc reader and cannot read the game disc.
- Insert the supported game disc and launch the game. Xbox describes this as the action to claim the entitlement; it does not publish a universal menu path or button sequence. See Xbox’s announcement, “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.”
- Check the eligibility result on your console. Not all Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs qualify. Microsoft says eligibility can change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and does not provide a complete public title-by-title list. The result for your particular disc is the relevant check.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The entitlement is conditioned on continued possession of that disc, and Microsoft may require revalidation. If you no longer possess it, access may be suspended or revoked.
What “convert” means—and what it does not
This process grants a digital entitlement for an eligible disc; it does not turn the disc into a transferable digital purchase. You cannot rely on claiming the entitlement, then selling or giving away the disc and keeping digital access. If you stop possessing the disc, Microsoft may suspend or revoke access.
If the disc is ineligible, or you lose access after no longer possessing it, Microsoft identifies buying a new digital version as a fallback. That is a separate purchase and does not depend on the disc-based entitlement.
Which option fits your situation?
| Route | Hardware required | Eligibility | Disc-possession condition | Separate digital purchase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claim an entitlement from a disc | Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive | Only supported discs; check the specific disc on the console | Yes. Continued possession is required, and revalidation may be required. | No separate digital purchase to claim an eligible entitlement |
| Buy the digital game | A compatible Xbox to play the digital game | Depends on whether a digital version is available for purchase | No disc-possession condition for the separate purchase | Yes |
If you have an Xbox Series S
The Series S is digital-only and has no physical disc reader, so you cannot insert a game disc into it to claim an entitlement. The disc-based claim must be made on a supported disc-drive console. If you do not have access to one, buying the digital version separately is the alternative described by Microsoft.
