PS5 Pro can deliver sharper, more stable images, improved ray-traced effects, or higher visual quality at a similar frame-rate target—but only in games specifically enhanced for it. The difference is not automatic across every PS5 game, and the result depends on each game’s Pro mode and, for some features, your display.
What changes in PS5 Pro-enhanced games?
The Pro’s extra rendering headroom gives developers more options: improve image clarity, add or strengthen ray tracing, or combine visual settings that previously required a choice between a higher-quality mode and a faster performance mode. Those options are implemented game by game; the console does not apply the same graphics upgrade to every title.

Sharper, steadier image detail
PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s machine-learning-based image upscaling technology. It can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, helping fine details look clearer without requiring the game to render every pixel at the output resolution. An upscaled 4K image is not the same as native 4K rendering.
On March 16, 2026, Sony said an upgraded PSSR was rolling out with broad support and described improvements to fine-detail clarity, image stability, and consistency in supported games. Remedy’s graphics technical director said the upgrade improves upscaling quality and stability; Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director cited more natural restoration of details such as hair and less flicker and afterimage. These are developer descriptions of supported titles, not a guarantee of identical results in every game. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
More detailed lighting and reflections
Ray tracing simulates how light interacts with surfaces. Depending on a game’s implementation, a Pro enhancement can improve reflections, refraction, ambient occlusion, or other lighting effects. These changes may be especially noticeable in reflective environments or scenes with complex lighting, but developers decide which effects to use and where to spend the available processing power.
More visual quality at a similar frame-rate target
Some games use the Pro’s headroom to narrow the gap between their quality and performance modes. A mode may add ray tracing or raise image quality while aiming for the same frame rate as a less demanding mode. “Target” matters: it describes the intended rate, not a promise that the game will stay locked to it in every scene.
Examples of what developers have changed
| Game or series | PS5 Pro enhancement described by its developer |
|---|---|
| The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered | A Pro-specific mode renders at 1440p, then uses PSSR to upscale to 4K, with a 60-fps target. This is the mode’s stated render and output approach, not native 4K rendering or a guaranteed locked frame rate. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Insomniac described a Performance Pro mode combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with a 60-fps target. |
| Dragon Age: The Veilguard | BioWare said its 60-fps Performance mode gained ray-traced ambient occlusion, which had been available on base PS5 only in the 30-fps Fidelity mode. |
| Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | Respawn said Quality mode offers its highest-ever console resolution at 2160p; Performance mode continues to target 60 fps with higher resolutions and ray-traced reflections and ambient occlusion. |

Why the Pro can do more—and what the numbers mean
Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the current PS5 and memory that is 28% faster, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are manufacturer-reported hardware figures and potential performance claims, not independent measurements or a promise that each game will render 45% faster. Real-world visual changes depend on the game’s implementation. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

Will your display show the difference?
It depends on the specific game mode and feature. Sony notes that some features require a compatible display, but there is no single display requirement for every Pro enhancement. Check the game’s stated resolution, refresh-rate or VRR support and any mode-specific requirements against your TV or monitor before assuming a particular feature will be available.

A sharper image can still be worthwhile on a screen below 4K, but output resolution, refresh rate and other supported features affect what you can see or use. No. Sony says Pro enhancements are available in selected PS5 games and vary by title. A game without a specific Pro enhancement should not be assumed to gain the new modes or effects described above. Sony reported more than 50 enhanced games at launch in November 2024; that is a historical launch figure, not a current count. Sony’s November 2024 launch-game announcement
- Look for an explicit PS5 Pro enhancement on the game’s current listing.
- Check patch notes or the game’s graphics menu for its Pro modes and settings.
- Compare the mode’s render resolution, output resolution and frame-rate target separately.
- Confirm that your display supports any mode-specific output or refresh feature you want to use.
Is PS5 Pro worth it for graphics?
It is most compelling if you play games with Pro-specific modes and value clearer image detail, better stability, stronger ray-traced effects, or a higher-quality mode that keeps a similar frame-rate target. The benefit is less certain if the games you play lack Pro enhancements or your display cannot use a feature you care about. Check support title by title rather than treating the console’s hardware figures as a guaranteed improvement in every game.
