Keep mods out of Red Dead Online
Use mods only in Story Mode and launch an unmodded setup for Red Dead Online. Rockstar Customer Support says online modding, exploits, or interference with other players can trigger account suspension. Its article was last updated May 20, 2024: Rockstar’s explanation of online mods and account impact.
Rockstar’s Mod Guidelines, dated September 10, 2026, say multiplayer mods are limited to Rockstar’s officially licensed creator platform or a license issued directly by Rockstar. The guidelines are not themselves a license and point to Rockstar’s Terms of Service and Creator Platform License Agreement. They include the Red Dead Redemption series: Rockstar’s Mod Guidelines. This is not a special permission for ordinary players to use mods in Red Dead Online.
Before installing: check the game and protect your files
Confirm the unmodded game works
Launch RDR2 normally before making changes. Note the game version and whether you use Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Rockstar Games Launcher; installation paths and mod compatibility can vary.

Back up your saves
Keep a separate copy of your save files before you begin. Rockstar’s clean-install instructions call out backing up save games as part of recovery. If practical, keep a restorable copy of the game files too; a separate safe storage location is sufficient, and no particular drive is required.
Choose a mod carefully
Read the mod’s page before downloading. Check its description, available files, required dependencies, installation and removal instructions, compatibility notes, and recent user reports. A host or file cannot be assumed safe simply because it is available for download. If your security software flags a file, stop and assess the source rather than bypassing the warning automatically.

Find the correct RDR2 folder
Mods that go in the game directory belong in the folder containing RDR2.exe. The location depends on the store, launcher, and any custom install path, so do not rely on a path copied from someone else’s guide. Locate the executable through your launcher or installation folders, then verify that you are working in the folder that contains it. The RDR2 Comprehensive Modding Guide explains common mod folder and loader arrangements.
Match the loader to the mod
Script Hook RDR2 and Lenny’s Mod Loader (LML) serve different purposes; neither is a universal substitute for the other. Use the classification below as a starting point, then follow the exact requirements on the mod’s current page.

| Mod type | Typical requirement | What to check |
|---|---|---|
.asi script mod |
Script Hook RDR2 | Confirm the mod’s listed dependencies and supported game build. See ScriptHookRDR2 V2 for its current instructions. |
| Replacement-file mod | Lenny’s Mod Loader (LML) | Follow the author’s folder structure and installation directions. |
| Hybrid mod | Both Script Hook RDR2 and LML may be required | Install both only when the mod explicitly lists them. |
| Mod with its own method | As specified by its author | Follow that mod’s current instructions rather than assuming a general loader recipe applies. |
Requirements and compatibility can change after game updates, and mods can depend on one another. Check the selected mod and loader pages for current versions and requirements; there is no universal compatibility guarantee.
Install and test one change at a time
- Download the files named by the mod author. Keep the archive until the mod works, and do not install optional or unrelated files unless the instructions call for them.
- Install the stated dependency or dependencies. Preserve any folder structure specified by the mod page. Avoid overwriting unrelated files.
- Copy the mod files to the specified locations. Some instructions place a mod’s
.asi,.ini, and.txtfiles in the game directory alongside Script Hook; that is an example for particular mods, not a universal setup. - Launch Story Mode and test. Start with one mod, or a small batch, and check that the game loads and the intended change works before adding more.
- Keep a record of changes. Note which files or loaders you added so you can identify the last change if the game stops launching.
If the game crashes or stops launching
- Remove or reverse the most recent change first, using the mod author’s removal instructions.
- Check the mod page and its dependencies for build compatibility, required files, or known conflicts.
- If needed, restore clean game files from your backup or follow Rockstar’s clean-install process. Restore saves from your separate backup if necessary.
- For general launch or crash issues, consult Rockstar’s RDR2 PC troubleshooting guidance. It covers ordinary troubleshooting and recommends keeping Windows and the Rockstar Games Launcher current. Do not treat disabling antivirus as a normal mod-install step; Rockstar directs users to their antivirus provider’s instructions when that is relevant to troubleshooting.
What “safe” can and cannot mean
These steps reduce the chance of losing saves, breaking the installation, or risking an online account; they do not make every download harmless or guarantee that a Story Mode mod will not cause crashes or save problems. Keep backups, assess sources and security warnings, make limited changes, and use an unmodded setup for online play.
