SQLite vs PostgreSQL for Small Experimental Projects: Which Should You Use?

SQLite suits local, low-operations experiments; PostgreSQL is a stronger fit when a project needs shared network access, concurrent writes, or PostgreSQL-specific types.

For a small experimental project, use SQLite when the application and database will live on the same device or host, writes are brief enough to queue, and minimal setup matters. Choose PostgreSQL when multiple clients need a shared database over a network, concurrent writes are important, or the project depends on PostgreSQL’s richer data types and features. The useful question is not simply “Which database is smaller?” but “Where will the data live, and how will the project access it?”

SQLite vs PostgreSQL for small experimental projects

SQLite and PostgreSQL overlap as relational databases, but they are built around different deployment models. SQLite is an embedded library that reads and writes a local database file; it does not require a separate database server process. PostgreSQL is a client/server system: a server manages the database and accepts connections from applications, including clients on other machines. SQLite’s project describes its focus this way: “SQLite does not compete with client/server databases. SQLite competes with fopen().” The point is that SQLite is especially useful when a project needs dependable local storage inside an application, not a shared network database service. Which database should I use for a small project?

Decision SQLite is a stronger fit when… PostgreSQL is a stronger fit when…
Deployment The application and data are on the same device or host, and a self-contained file is convenient. Separate clients need to reach a shared database service, especially over a network.
Write concurrency Writes are short and can wait their turn. Many clients need concurrent access or a write-heavy workload is expected.
Operations You want to avoid running and administering a separate database service for the experiment. Operating a server is acceptable in exchange for shared connections and network access.
Schema and types You can manage constraints and type assumptions explicitly and do not need PostgreSQL-specific features. Native types or specialized facilities such as boolean, date/time, UUID, JSONB, or text search matter.
Portability The application is likely to stay on SQLite, or you are prepared to test behavior across engines. PostgreSQL is the planned production database, or PostgreSQL-specific behavior is part of the design.

These are workload choices, not a universal ranking. A prototype that runs on one machine with local data is a natural SQLite use. A project that already needs remote shared access is not made simpler by being small; PostgreSQL may be the better starting point.

How write concurrency affects the choice

SQLite: many readers, one writer at a time

SQLite supports unlimited simultaneous readers, but only one writer can write to a given database file at a time. That does not automatically rule it out for a multi-user application: short write transactions can queue and take turns. The warning sign is simultaneous write demand that cannot tolerate waiting. PostgreSQL: concurrent reads and writes

PostgreSQL uses multiversion concurrency control (MVCC). Its documentation explains that ordinary reads and writes do not block one another under this model, which can help when many clients use the database concurrently. This is not a guarantee that every operation is lock-free: PostgreSQL also has row, table, and advisory locks, and transaction design still matters. PostgreSQL 18: Introduction to Concurrency Control

Types, constraints, and the cost of changing engines

SQLite’s flexible typing needs deliberate safeguards

By default, SQLite uses flexible typing: for example, a nonnumeric string inserted into an INTEGER column may be stored as text rather than rejected. SQLite added STRICT tables in version 3.37.0, released 2021-11-27, for applications that want mandatory datatype constraints. SQLite has no separate BOOLEAN or DATETIME storage class; dates and times can be represented as ISO-8601 text, Unix-time integers, or Julian-day real values. SQLite: Quirks, Caveats, and Gotchas In SQLite

SQLite parses foreign-key constraints, but enforcement is off by default for compatibility reasons. Applications should enable it at runtime with PRAGMA foreign_keys and test that it is active rather than assume the schema alone enforces relationships. SQLite: Quirks, Caveats, and Gotchas In SQLite

PostgreSQL offers native typed and specialized facilities

PostgreSQL documents native boolean, date, time, timestamp, uuid, json, and jsonb types, among others. If these types or related PostgreSQL-specific behavior are important to the design, build and test the schema against PostgreSQL early. PostgreSQL 18: Data Types

A later switch is possible, but not automatically drop-in

Moving from SQLite to a stricter database can expose assumptions that flexible typing allowed. Before choosing SQLite for a prototype that may later use PostgreSQL, account for engine-specific SQL behavior, constraints, date representation, and migration tooling. If PostgreSQL is the expected destination, use it in integration testing early enough to catch incompatibilities rather than treating a successful SQLite prototype as proof of compatibility. What “small” means for traffic and storage

Traffic figures do not determine a database choice by themselves: database use per request and the share of writes matter. The SQLite Project’s guide gives a conservative estimate of fewer than 100,000 hits per day, as of its page updated 2025-05-31, while noting that actual capacity depends on how heavily a site uses the database. It advises considering a client/server engine for write-intensive sites or sites requiring multiple servers. This is guidance, not a capacity guarantee for a particular application or a direct comparison with a PostgreSQL benchmark. SQLite: Appropriate Uses For SQLite

  • powful cputhe cpu of the raspberry pi 4 model b adopts the latest arm cortex-a72 architecture, which is also used in high-performance smartphones, and has evolved into a real pc.the operating clock has been changed from pi3's 1.2ghz to 1.5ghz, and the speed has become a different dimension with the updated architecture.
  • video output/gputhe on-board gpu of the raspberry pi 4 supports 4kp@60 and newly supports h.265 decoding, opengl es 3.0, etc.as for the video output, two micro hdmis with smaller connectors are installed, and the raspberry pi 4 also supports dual screen output.
  • usb 3.0with a new soc, the speed of the raspberry pi 4 around i/o has been improved, and finally usb 3.0 is supported.usb boot is faster and more convenient.
  • network&bluetoothgigabit ethernet (wired lan) has also been significantly speeded up from 300mbps of pi 3b + to 1000mbps (logical value).in addition, bluetooth supported version has been upgraded to 5.0, and the transfer speed of pi 4 has been doubled.
  • power input connectorthe power input connector of the raspberry pi 4 has been changed to usb type c. it is easier to use than micro usb and can supply a larger current reliably.the power requirement of raspberry pi 4 model b is 5v 3.0a, which is higher than the previous model.

The same guide cites a historical example of about 400,000 to 500,000 HTTP requests per day, with about 15–20% of those requests touching the database; it explicitly dates that example to 2015. It is historical context, not a prediction of what another deployment will handle. SQLite: Appropriate Uses For SQLite

SQLite’s documented maximum database size is 281 terabytes (248 bytes), according to the SQLite Project page updated 2025-05-31. Filesystem limits may be lower, and the guide advises considering a client/server database as data approaches the terabyte range. That maximum is a technical limit, not a practical target or a reason to use SQLite for a large shared dataset. SQLite: Appropriate Uses For SQLite

Choose based on the project’s next real requirement

  • Choose SQLite for local application data when a single-file database and minimal operations fit the access pattern.
  • Choose PostgreSQL when remote clients need shared access, write contention is likely to matter, or PostgreSQL-specific types and features are part of the design.
  • Estimate write contention rather than relying on user count alone: SQLite writers take turns, while PostgreSQL’s MVCC supports ordinary concurrent reads and writes.
  • If you start with SQLite but expect PostgreSQL later, test constraints, types, SQL behavior, and migrations across both engines early.
