Choose Steam Remote Play Together when a supported game’s local multiplayer is enough and one player can host it; choose the game’s native online co-op when that mode better fits your group. Remote Play Together streams a host-run local session to friends, so it can bring some games without built-in online play to remote players. Neither option is universally better: check the particular game’s support, player limit, controls, ownership requirements and connection experience.
How the two multiplayer options differ
Steam Remote Play Together streams local multiplayer
The host runs the game on their computer. Steam streams the game’s video and audio to remote players and sends their input back to the host. This lets friends play supported local co-op, local multiplayer or shared-screen games remotely, even when the game itself does not offer native online play. Steam’s Remote Play overview describes the streaming feature; Steam Support explains its host-and-guest model.
Steam says the host is the only player who needs to own and install the game. Guests join the host’s streamed session rather than launching their own copy. That ownership arrangement comes from Steam’s 2019 launch announcement, so check the game’s current details for any other requirements. Steam’s Remote Play Together announcement.
Native online co-op is the game’s own online mode
With native online co-op, players connect through the multiplayer mode built into the game. Its requirements and features vary by title. Check the current store listing or in-game options for how many people can join, which platforms are supported, how invites and progression work, and whether each player needs to own the game. Steam’s general Remote Play information does not establish how a particular game’s online mode compares.

When Remote Play Together is the better fit
- The game’s Steam store page explicitly lists Remote Play Together support.
- The game’s local multiplayer works for your group, but its own online mode is absent or does not meet your needs.
- One player can host and run the game, while guests prefer not to buy or install it.
- Your group can use the game’s local control setup through streamed input, with individual controllers or shared keyboard and mouse as appropriate.
Steam’s overview says the feature streams video, audio and voice between players, supports players using their own controllers, and lets the host share or limit keyboard and mouse access. It also says friends see the game rather than the host’s desktop. A compatible controller is optional if a player needs one; keyboard-and-mouse sharing is another possibility. Check the game and device requirements before assuming a particular input method will work. Steam Remote Play.
When to choose native online co-op
Prefer the game’s own online mode if it supports the group’s needs and offers the features you want—for example, its player capacity, platform compatibility, invites or progression. Verify those details for the specific game rather than assuming that all online co-op works the same way.

There is no general performance verdict between the two options in Steam’s feature materials. Steam describes Remote Play Together as streaming “within milliseconds” over a fast internet connection, but that is not a controlled comparison with native online co-op. Actual experience depends on the game and the players’ connections; the official pages do not establish that Remote Play Together is always faster, more reliable or higher quality.
A quick checklist before you invite friends
- Confirm support: Look for the Remote Play Together label in the game’s Steam store-page details. Do not assume every local multiplayer game supports it. Steam Support.
- Decide which mode meets the group’s needs: Is streamed local multiplayer sufficient, or do you need a feature available only in the game’s online mode?
- Confirm who hosts and owns the game: For Remote Play Together, the host runs the game; Steam’s 2019 announcement says only the host needs to own and install it. Steam’s announcement.
- Check the game’s player limit and controls: Verify the specific title’s capacity and supported inputs. Steam’s 2019 launch post said “Up to four players,or even more in ideal conditions”; that dated general statement is not a guarantee for every game. Steam, October 21, 2019.
- Consider everyone’s connection: Remote Play Together relies on real-time streaming. Steam calls for a fast connection but does not give a minimum broadband speed on its overview page, so there is no supported universal speed threshold to apply. Steam Remote Play.
- Check the invitation flow you plan to use: Steam’s current overview describes inviting Steam Friends. A 2021 announcement also described URL invites through Steam or Steam Link without an account for that invitation flow; do not assume that dated detail applies to every current device or invite method. Steam Remote Play; Steam’s 2021 announcement.
How to start a Remote Play Together session
- Launch the supported game on the host’s computer.
- Make sure your friend is logged in to Steam on a supported device.
- Open the Steam Overlay in the game with Shift+Tab.
- In the Friends list, choose Remote Play Together and have your friend accept the invitation.
This is the basic flow documented by Steam Support. If the option is missing, first check the game’s store-page support details and whether you are using the intended host account and device.
