For the fastest Steam downloads, leave the download limit unrestricted; to keep online co-op responsive, pause downloads or limit their bandwidth while you play. Steam downloads, a game’s online multiplayer connection, and Steam Remote Play are three different workloads, so the right setting depends on which one is causing trouble.
Choose settings for the problem you’re solving
Steam’s download controls manage game files delivered to your PC. Native online co-op sends gameplay data between your game and a server or other players. Steam Remote Play streams audio and video from a host PC to another device. A setting that helps one workload may not improve the others.
- Downloading or updating: adjust the download limit, queue, schedule, and region.
- Native online co-op: reduce competing traffic and check the game’s own latency and server settings.
- Remote Play or Steam Link: stabilize the local connection and tune streaming bandwidth and quality.
Manage Steam downloads without disrupting co-op
Set a download limit only when you need to share bandwidth
Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and check Limit download speed. Leave downloads unrestricted when your goal is to let Steam use available capacity. Set a limit when downloads are competing with a live game, a call, or other household traffic. The cap controls how much of your connection Steam’s downloader can use; it does not make an individual download faster.
Steam may show download limits in bytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. These are different units: one byte equals eight bits. Compare like with like before choosing a cap, and remember that other devices and network conditions affect how much bandwidth is actually available. Steam does not prescribe a universal cap for co-op play.

Decide whether Steam should download while you play
Steam automatically pauses downloads when you launch a game, prioritizing the game’s network activity. To keep downloading during play, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. If your co-op session becomes choppy, disable the option or limit Steam’s download rate.
This setting manages competition for your connection; it cannot correct latency or problems on the game’s server. Steam’s guidance explains the default behavior in its Downloads automatically pause when launching a game article.
Control update timing and priority
Use the Download Manager to review the queue and schedule updates for a time that suits you. Per-game Properties > Updates provides automatic-update behavior and priority controls. Launching a game can prompt that game to update even when you would otherwise prefer to defer downloads.

Try another download region only to diagnose download problems
If a download stalls or Steam reports a delivery error, choose the region closest to you; if needed, test the next closest region and compare. Switch back if the change does not help. This is a troubleshooting experiment for Steam’s content-delivery route, not a dependable way to improve multiplayer matchmaking or game-server latency.

Troubleshoot lag in native online co-op
Check the game’s actual server or peer
When the game shows ping or server latency, use that information to assess the connection involved in the co-op session. Steam’s download region selects a content-delivery path, while games may select multiplayer regions independently. If the game has its own region or server controls, check those rather than assuming a Steam download-region change will improve play.
Remove competing traffic, then investigate the connection
Pause large Steam downloads and other bandwidth-heavy background activity while playing. Steam notes that background programs using bandwidth can contribute to choppy gameplay and lag. If the problem persists, check local Wi-Fi congestion, the router, and the game’s server or peer conditions. A download setting cannot guarantee a fix for network latency outside Steam’s downloader.

Make Steam Remote Play or Steam Link more stable
Start with the host’s connection to the router
When supported, connect the host PC directly to the router with Ethernet. Steam identifies wireless interference—and setups where a wireless host transmits to a router that then retransmits to a wireless client—as possible causes of poor streaming. Ethernet is a local-link troubleshooting step, not a promise of higher internet-plan speeds.
If you need Wi-Fi, test the 5 GHz band from the place where you actually play. It can be less congested than 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range may make the signal weaker farther from the router. Reduce other large transfers or streams while diagnosing.
Use the performance overlay to identify network hitches
Enable the Remote Play performance overlay and watch its network-time graph when a hitch occurs. Large spikes in variable network time can point to streaming-network trouble. Change one setting at a time and check whether the graph and the experience improve, so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Tune bandwidth and quality gradually
Set streaming quality to Balanced or Fast to trade visual quality for lower bandwidth use. In advanced settings, begin with a low bandwidth limit and raise it gradually until hitches appear, then return to the last stable setting. Steam Support also gives 3 Mbit/s as an example starting point for Remote Play tuning; it is not a universal recommendation for downloads or native co-op. Enable network prioritization if the option is available.
Router QoS or device-priority controls may help prioritize the host and streaming client, but names and behavior differ by router. Verify the change during actual play instead of assuming that prioritization will improve every setup. See Steam’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance and Remote Play advanced settings guidance.

A Steam download-rate graph is not a pure test of your internet connection. After data arrives, Steam may need CPU and disk resources to unpack and install it. Steam says its reported download rate can be throttled to match the client’s ability to perform those installation tasks; an SD card’s write speed can also affect total installation time.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
When the rate rises and falls during unpacking or disk activity, compare Steam’s network and disk activity and check the target drive before blaming your ISP. Run a separate connection speed test to assess internet performance independently. Steam explains the distinction in Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting.
Pick the right trade-off
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Unrestricted Steam downloads | You want Steam to use available capacity for downloads. | Other people or applications may have less bandwidth while the transfer runs. |
| Download limit or downloads paused during play | A live game or household traffic needs headroom. | Steam downloads may take longer or wait until later. |
| Ethernet for the Remote Play host | You want to reduce wireless variability on the host-to-router link. | The host needs a wired connection to the router. |
| Lower Remote Play quality or bandwidth | Streaming hitches when the network is under load. | The stream may look less detailed. |
| Storage and installation checks | Steam’s displayed rate fluctuates while files are being installed. | These checks help identify a local bottleneck; they do not increase internet capacity. |
Steam’s official support guidance describes troubleshooting, not a controlled performance test. Results vary with the client, operating system, game networking, router, ISP, storage, and household traffic; no single profile guarantees faster downloads or smoother play.
