For a 4K TV that needs an external player, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820X) is a sensible compatibility-led shortlist pick if the sports services you need support Roku in your country. It is not a universal football solution: the broadcaster, match rights and any blackout rules determine what you can watch, while the stick only runs the app. If your smart TV already has the right apps and supports the playback quality you want, you may not need another device.
This guide covers both meanings of “football”: the NFL and college-football context common in the United States, and association football, including the Premier League, in the UK and other markets.
What matters more than the streaming device
Start with the fixture and where you will watch it. A device cannot add sports rights, remove a blackout or replace a required subscription. Broadcasters and services vary by sport, country and season, so identify the service carrying your match before choosing hardware.
- Check rights: Confirm the exact game, its local broadcaster and whether your location or provider affects access.
- Check the app: Verify that the service has an app for your TV or the exact streaming-device model, in your country.
- Check playback needs: Match the service’s resolution, HDR and audio requirements to your TV, network and sound equipment.
Published support pages list Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and Google/Android TV among platforms used by major sports apps, but platform support does not guarantee that every event is available to every subscriber.

Which device should you choose?
| Option | When it makes sense | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K (3820X) | A compatibility-led shortlist for a 4K TV when the required services support Roku. NOW lists this model for Ultra Boost UHD, HDR and Dolby Atmos capability. | Availability of each app in your country, the exact model’s current support, and compatible TV, HDMI, audio and network setup. |
| Another Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV or Google/Android TV device | When it already runs the sports apps you need, or fits your existing TV and home setup better. | Exact model and service compatibility. A platform listing alone does not establish that every model supports every app feature. |
| Your smart TV’s built-in apps | When the TV has the required apps and supports the playback mode you want. | App availability and quality support for your TV model. The available support information does not compare smart-TV performance with external sticks. |
The Roku recommendation is based on published compatibility information, not a comparative speed or reliability test. No objective “fastest” or “most reliable” device is established here.
US viewers: where live NFL games are carried

| Game category | Service or broadcaster listed for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Local Sunday afternoon games | CBS and FOX |
| Sunday Night Football | NBC |
| Monday Night Football | ESPN and ABC |
| Thursday Night Football and the Black Friday game | Prime Video |
| Selected exclusive games | NFL Network |
| São Paulo game | YouTube |
| Christmas Day games | Netflix |
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are not available live on NFL+ and require NFL Sunday Ticket, according to NFL support guidance. Blackouts and location or provider restrictions may still apply.
The NFL’s provider-authenticated device guidance lists Roku firmware 11.0.0 b1+, Fire TV 6+, Apple TV tvOS 16+ and Android/Google TV 7.1+, among other devices. Those requirements concern platform support; they do not provide provider credentials, a subscription or rights to a game. ESPN also lists Roku and Fire TV among supported TV-connected platforms, and says access to some live ESPN networks, events and replays may require authentication through an affiliated TV or internet provider.

UK and international viewers: football rights are local
For the 2025/26 season, the Premier League says UK live matches are broadcast by Sky Sports and TNT Sports. BBC Sport is the league’s UK free-to-air highlights partner; the league does not sell one universal live-match subscription. NOW offers live Sky Sports Premier League and EFL streaming, and its compatible-device information includes Roku players, Fire TV sticks, Apple TV and Chromecast/Google TV devices.
Rights differ outside the UK, too. The Premier League’s rights information for 2025/26 through 2027/28 lists NBC Sports in the United States, Fubo in Canada and ESPN in Brazil, alongside partners in other territories. Check the league or broadcaster’s current local schedule rather than assuming a UK service works elsewhere. Prices and membership availability can change; check NOW’s current terms before subscribing.

- Find the broadcaster or service carrying that fixture, including any blackout, location or provider-authentication conditions.
- Check that the service app is supported on your smart TV or the exact streaming-device model you are considering.
- If you want UHD, HDR or advanced audio, verify the service tier, TV/HDMI, network speed and sound-equipment requirements together.
- Buy an external streamer only if it fills a real gap in your TV’s app or playback support.
