Its custom RP2040 board, 0.42-inch monochrome OLED, onboard touch controls and small battery pack turn an early display experiment into a self-contained, if deliberately rough, Doom machine.
How does the tiny LEGO brick computer run Doom?
Brown built the device around a custom circuit board using the RP2040 microcontroller. The Doom port runs on that board, and the image appears on a 0.42-inch OLED fitted into the face of a LEGO-style slope brick. This is local gameplay, not a remote video feed: the brick itself does the computing.
The display is monochrome, not a miniature color screen. The low-resolution OLED uses rapid updates and sub-frames to create the appearance of grayscale. Raspberry Pi’s April 2023 account describes an SPI OLED and a frame made by joining four PCB panels; the front panel carries the RP2040 and a 4MB flash chip. Brown explained the construction as a way to get a precisely shaped frame, battery contacts and a tucked-away USB port (Raspberry Pi, The MagPi #129).
Can you play Doom on the brick itself?
In the later version reported by Hackster, yes. Brown added a small battery pack and an accelerometer, while two studs on top act as capacitive touch buttons. That means the reported build does not need an external controller to play. The controls were not perfectly tuned: Brown said the capacitive touch “wasn’t tuned very well, so it’s a bit shooty” (Hackster.io).

“Playable” is the right level of claim. The report establishes that Doom runs on the device and that its controls work, but Brown’s own comment makes clear this is a compact maker project, not a polished handheld with refined input.
How the project evolved
From animated display to external monitor
The project began as a replacement for the painted display on a LEGO-style computer brick: Brown fitted a programmable animated screen into the face. In an intermediate stage, he wired the brick to act as a tiny external monitor, showing Doom output supplied by a separate computer. That version could display the game, but it was not running Doom locally.

Moving Doom onto the RP2040
Brown’s next step was to adapt Graham Sanderson’s playable Doom port for the RP2040 and a single-color, low-resolution OLED. The RP2040’s second core rapidly updates the display to produce apparent grayscale. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 feature describes this electronics-and-display build, when Brown was still looking for a neat way to fit an internal battery ( Recommended Free Tools
