There is no single label, color, price, or boot test that proves every Pokémon handheld cartridge is genuine. The safest approach is to compare several clues: the offer and seller, the cartridge and packaging, any seals, and whether the item’s region and language match the listing. Nintendo publishes general counterfeit warnings and one specific DS-card troubleshooting test, but not an official model-by-model authentication chart for every Pokémon cartridge.
Start with several clues, not one supposed giveaway
Nintendo’s counterfeit detection guidance advises buyers to be wary of prices well below average retail, poor or suspicious print, packaging concerns, components sold separately, missing or questionable quality seals, and mismatches in region or language. These are warning signs to assess together—not a certification method that can settle every case.
- Price and seller: A conspicuously low offer deserves extra scrutiny. Nintendo says it can indicate a counterfeit or a scam, but price alone does not prove either.
- Print and packaging: Request clear photographs of the actual cartridge and any box or manual. Look for blurred, incomplete, or otherwise suspicious printing, and check that the printed game identity matches the listing.
- Completeness: Confirm whether the sale is cartridge-only or includes packaging and instructions. Nintendo flags missing materials and components separated or shipped separately as reasons for caution.
- Seal: Check whether the relevant original Nintendo quality seal or licensee seal is present and looks consistent with the item. Treat it as one clue, not proof.
- Region and language: Compare the item with the listing description and the region and language you intend to buy.
Nintendo says to apply its caution to used games too. A listing title or stock image is not a substitute for evidence of the particular copy being sold.
What to ask for before buying
- Ask for photos of the actual item. Request sharp, well-lit images of the front and back of the cartridge, plus the box and manual if they are included. Avoid relying only on promotional artwork or a generic product photo.
- Match the item to the listing. Check that the printed title, region, language, and included materials agree with the seller’s description. Clarify any mismatch before paying.
- Inspect print and seals. Note blurry or incomplete printing and questionable or missing seals. A difference is a reason to investigate, not an automatic verdict.
- Assess the offer in context. If the price is far below comparable offers, weigh that alongside the photos and seller information. Nintendo identifies unusually low pricing as a possible warning, not a counterfeit-price threshold.
- Check exactly what is being sold. Make sure the price and description refer to the cartridge and any accessories or materials you expect. Ask why components are separated if the listing suggests they were originally part of one package.
What the DS error test can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo documents a narrow troubleshooting case for the Nintendo DSi message “An Error Occurred. Press and hold POWER to Turn the System Off” when it appears during a Nintendo DS game-card game. Nintendo says, “Our experience shows that if you see this error, your game is likely a counterfeit product.” Follow the steps only for that specific message and scenario; this is not a universal test for Pokémon cartridges or other systems.

- Try the DS game card in an original-style Nintendo DS or a Nintendo DS Lite, as described in Nintendo’s support article.
- If the card continues to fail in that system, Nintendo says the card is more likely defective.
- If it works there, Nintendo says it is likely counterfeit.
Do not apply this result to unrelated error messages, other consoles, or cartridges that have not produced the specified DSi error.
How to interpret Nintendo seals
Nintendo’s counterfeit FAQ recommends checking for the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or Original Nintendo Licensee Seal of Quality as one part of a broader assessment. Separately, Nintendo’s licensed-products guidance describes the “Official Nintendo Licensed Product” seal as assurance that a product was evaluated and licensed. That page specifically discusses accessories and peripherals; it does not establish that a seal on any old game cartridge, by itself, proves authenticity.

Why visual rules for every Pokémon cartridge are hard to give
Nintendo’s historical anti-piracy training manual includes examples for Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, and DSi software. It is an older document, not a current, comprehensive visual standard for every Pokémon title, region, and cartridge revision. Its historical suggested retail prices are not current market values or counterfeit cutoffs.
The official guidance available here does not provide a complete, authoritative chart of shell colors, board layouts, stamp patterns, screws, or chip markings for every Pokémon release. A single visual detail should therefore not be presented as a definitive test across Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, or later systems. Opening a cartridge to inspect its board is also beyond ordinary buyer checks; the historical manual’s examples are not a universal consumer test.

Use official references without overreading them
Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum Version instruction booklet identifies the game as a Nintendo DS title. That can help verify the platform named in a listing, but a manual or marketplace listing cannot authenticate a particular cartridge.
For a suspected counterfeit, Nintendo’s counterfeit FAQ also provides its piracy guidance. Use the warning signs above to make a purchase decision; they are not a substitute for an official, title-by-title authentication service.
