How much should I save for a PS5?
Start by choosing the model, checking a current offer in your market, and calculating the total for your own purchase. Sony’s revised RRPs took effect on April 2, 2026. These are recommended retail prices, not a promise that a retailer will charge exactly that amount.

These are Sony’s RRPs announced March 27, 2026, and effective April 2, 2026; actual offers, availability, bundles, delivery charges and taxes can vary by seller and location. Choose your edition before setting the target
Compare the locally available versions that suit you, then use the price for your chosen model as the console portion of the budget. The listed RRPs alone do not establish which model is best for every player, or whether the Digital Edition will cost less over time for an individual buyer.

Turn the console price into your personal total
Add only costs relevant to your intended purchase: applicable tax and delivery, plus any game, extra controller or other accessory you have decided to get. There is no universal “true cost” without a country, retailer and bundle. Keep the console amount separate from optional extras so you can see what is essential to your plan.
How to make a budget that can survive a price change
- Pick the model and edition. Decide what you want before choosing a savings target.
- Check a current local listing. Compare a retailer offer with Sony’s dated RRP where that comparison is available.
- Calculate your planned total. Add applicable tax, delivery and only the games or accessories you intend to purchase.
- Set a spending ceiling and review date. Choose a maximum you are comfortable spending. If the offer is above it, keep saving or reconsider the purchase later rather than relying on a predicted sale or increase.
- Recheck close to purchase. Record the market and date for any price you use, then verify the local listing again before buying.
This approach gives you a target based on what is known today without pretending the eventual checkout price is certain.

What if the PlayStation price changes before I buy?
Use the newest local offer you can verify, not an old screenshot, saved figure or launch-era price. Sony has changed RRPs at different times and in different markets: its 2022 notice raised prices in selected markets while explicitly saying there would be no U.S. increase in that round; its 2026 announcement set revised prices globally. That history shows prices can change, but it does not establish when a future increase, discount or sale might happen. See Sony’s 2022 announcement.
Older prices are not suitable current targets. Sony’s 2020 launch release listed U.S. launch RRPs of $399.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition and $499.99 for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive; those figures are historical context, not current prices. Should I wait or budget for the current price?
Budget against a current, verified offer if you are planning to buy, and decide for yourself whether that total fits your ceiling. Waiting may change what offers are available, but the available official price history does not say when a sale or price change will occur. Sony’s published RRPs are dated commercial prices, not a forecast, typical transaction price or recommended savings timeline.
