Microsoft says it is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games, but it has not yet named supported PC storefronts, published a full compatibility list, or announced a consumer release date or price. The often-cited 2027 milestone is when alpha hardware is planned to reach developers—not a promised retail launch.
What Microsoft has announced about Project Helix
In a March 11, 2026 GDC update, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald identified Project Helix as the company’s next-generation first-party console. He said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games,” with leading performance and a focus on cross-device play. Xbox Wire’s announcement is the primary source for the details currently made public.
That statement establishes the intended breadth of the platform, not how every game will run. Microsoft has not said that all PC games will work, named specific PC stores or launchers, or published a game-by-game compatibility list. In particular, the announcement does not confirm Steam support.
Confirmed platform details
- Hardware direction: Project Helix is powered by a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC). Xbox says it is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). A separate April 30, 2026 Microsoft Game Dev update describes it as an AMD-based custom SoC designed with next-generation DirectX.
- Developer milestone: Xbox plans to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027. That timing is for development hardware, not a consumer launch.
- Legacy Xbox games: Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. The announcement does not identify every supported title.
Can Project Helix play PC games?
Microsoft’s answer is yes in broad terms: the console is designed to play PC games as well as Xbox games. The practical details remain unannounced. The official materials reviewed do not specify which PC storefronts, launchers, or individual games will be supported, nor do they establish universal compatibility with Windows games.

Xbox’s cross-device ecosystem offers context, but it is not a substitute for a Helix compatibility announcement. Xbox Play Anywhere lets supported games move across screens, carries progress, and requires a game to be purchased once, according to Xbox. In its March 2026 post, Xbox reported more than 1,500 games in the Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams that had shipped games with the feature. Those figures describe Play Anywhere—not the number of PC games confirmed for Project Helix.
Xbox also cited Game Pass, purchases, and other storefronts as ways players access games across devices. It did not announce a specific Helix subscription offer or confirm which storefronts will be available on the console.

Is Project Helix a PC or a console?
Microsoft calls Project Helix a next-generation first-party Xbox console. It is designed to play both console and PC games, but that description does not settle the details of its operating system, interface, or PC software support. Until Microsoft explains those aspects, the clearest description is a console with an announced PC-game capability—not a conventional Windows gaming PC or a confirmed replacement for one.
Microsoft’s related Windows announcement should not be mistaken for a Helix system description. Xbox said Windows 11 Xbox mode would begin rolling out in April 2026 in select markets. The company describes it as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that keeps Windows open and flexible. That is a Windows feature; it does not confirm Project Helix’s operating system or accessory compatibility. The Windows Experience Blog explains the feature.

When does Project Helix come out?
Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date. Its stated 2027 plan is to ship alpha hardware to developers so they can work on games and the platform. Alpha hardware is a development milestone, not evidence that the console will be on sale in 2027. No retail launch window is established in the official announcements cited here.
