To recruit the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3, meet it during the chicken-chase scene at the Goblin Camp, invite it to your camp, then convince Krolla to release it. If you can, do this before clearing the camp or changing its state; Larian has documented bugs tied to the cub and the Goblin Camp.
Where to find the Owlbear Cub
Go to the Goblin Camp and speak with Krolla, who runs the chicken-chase activity. The cub appears in connection with that scene. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s Owlbear Cub guide describes recruiting it by inviting it to camp and persuading Krolla to let it go.
How to get the cub to join your camp
- Approach the cub during the chicken chase. Engage with the scene through Krolla at the Goblin Camp.
- Make the cub receptive to you. The documented route lets the cub smell your hand or uses the Speak with Animals spell to communicate with it.
- Invite it to your camp. Choose the interaction that asks the cub to come to your camp.
- Convince Krolla to release it. The documented recruitment route requires securing Krolla’s permission for the cub to leave.
The available sources do not establish that winning the chase is mandatory in every route, or that one particular dialogue choice or check guarantees recruitment in every game state.
When does the Owlbear Cub show up at camp?
There is no reliable, fixed number of long rests established for its arrival. After you complete the Goblin Camp interaction, allow the game to progress and check your camp for subsequent visits.

What to do if the Owlbear Cub is missing
Sequence can matter. If possible, meet the cub and complete the recruitment conversation before clearing the Goblin Camp or otherwise changing its state. Larian’s Patch 6 notes documented a case where the cub remained at the Goblin Camp after the goblins left with Minthara if it had been kidnapped after its mother died. The same patch notes say the cub and Scratch can play together at any camp, not just the main Act One wilderness camp.
Larian also recorded fixes for cub-related camp problems: Hotfix 21, dated March 7, 2024, addressed a bug that caused the cub to disappear from camp, while Community Update 14 noted a fix for the cub spawning and then disappearing when all Goblin leaders were killed. These are records of historical fixes, not a guarantee that every current save will behave identically. If the camp has already changed or the cub never arrives, the outcome may depend on earlier encounter and quest flags; recovery is not assured.
