Google’s official Stadia Controller Bluetooth conversion window has expired. Google’s latest surfaced tool page listed December 31, 2025 as the deadline, and a January 2026 report said the page was returning a 404. The endpoint’s current response has not been independently confirmed. If you converted your controller before the deadline, you can still pair it over Bluetooth; if you did not, Google’s documented conversion route may no longer be available.
What Google’s Bluetooth conversion did
The conversion changed the controller’s firmware so it could connect to devices over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 4.2 instead of Stadia’s Wi-Fi connection. It was a one-way change: Google says enabling Bluetooth permanently disables the controller’s Stadia Wi-Fi functionality, and it cannot be reversed. You can still use the controller over a USB-C cable without converting it. Google’s connection instructions explain the change and its limitations.
Can you still convert an unconverted controller?
Google’s historical process used a browser-based firmware tool. The latest surfaced version of the official mode page gave December 31, 2025 as the availability deadline. A January 2026 report said the page was returning a 404, although that endpoint’s current response has not been directly verified. Google’s support instructions still show an older December 31, 2024 deadline; the later date on the mode page is the better guide to the last stated availability window.
Google’s documented workflow was:
- Turn on the controller by holding the Stadia button until the status light comes on.
- Connect it to a computer with a USB cable.
- Open Chrome 108 or later and go to
stadia.google.com/controller. - Follow the on-screen instructions to switch to Bluetooth mode.
Because the official window has passed, these steps describe how Google’s tool worked, not a guarantee that it can still perform the conversion. Community-preserved flashing projects have been reported, but their availability, reliability, and safety are not established here; Google does not endorse them. The January 2026 report discusses the page’s reported disappearance. A USB-C cable alone cannot restore access to the expired conversion tool.

Pair a controller that is already converted
- Hold the Stadia button and Y together for two seconds. The status light should blink orange to show pairing mode.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the device you want to use and select the Stadia controller.
- Once connected, a solid white light indicates the controller is on and connected.
A computer needs a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. Google focused its compatibility testing on Windows 10 and 11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. It cautions that compatibility varies, other platforms and services were not substantially tested, and vibration may not work with every hardware configuration. Google’s connection instructions provide its platform guidance.
What changes when you use Bluetooth?
- Headphone jack: The controller’s 3.5 mm headset jack does not work over Bluetooth. Connect headphones to the paired device instead, or use the controller over USB.
- Assistant and Capture buttons: They no longer launch Google Assistant or capture gameplay after Stadia shut down.
- Second controller: Tandem Mode can connect another controller while the Stadia Controller is connected wirelessly.
- Wired use: USB-C remains an option whether or not you enabled Bluetooth.

Troubleshoot an unresponsive controller
- Charge the controller for 30 minutes using a functional charger and USB-C cable.
- With the controller off, hold Y, then press and hold the Stadia button for 10 seconds. Release the buttons.
- Hold the Stadia button for two seconds, or connect the controller to power.
- If necessary, factory reset it by holding Assistant and Capture together for six seconds. After a reset, pair it again.
These recovery steps come from Google’s troubleshooting instructions. A reset is not the Bluetooth conversion process.
