DuckStation is an emulator for the original PlayStation (PS1, also called PSX). It lets you play PS1 games on supported Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android devices. It does not emulate every PlayStation generation: for PS2 games, DuckStation is not the relevant emulator.
What DuckStation emulates
DuckStation recreates the original PlayStation’s hardware in software. The project describes its goals as accuracy, playability, speed, and long-term maintainability, while also aiming to run on lower-end devices. Its features include options for improving visuals and convenience, but those options are not guarantees that every game will look or run better with them enabled.
This distinction matters if you are choosing between emulators. PCSX2 is primarily associated with PS2 emulation; its documentation describes its PS1 mode as highly experimental, with low compatibility, and says, “We recommend DuckStation” for PSX games. That is a recommendation specifically about PS1 play, not a claim that the two programs are interchangeable for PS2 games. PCSX2’s PS1 compatibility information
What you need to use it
A supported device
The project lists builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and links to an Android app. In the repository accessed for this article, its stated baselines are Windows 10 or 11 version 1809 or newer, Linux AppImages with an Ubuntu 22.04-equivalent baseline, and macOS Ventura 13.3 or newer. Requirements can change and vary by build and device architecture, so check the current DuckStation repository for your platform before installing. Hardware rendering also depends on a GPU and graphics API supported by the build.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Playstation classic comes with 20 pre-loaded games including, final Fantasy Vll, jumping Flash, Ridge racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild arms
- This mini Console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation
- Includes two wired controllers, a virtual memory card and an HDMI cable
A PlayStation BIOS image
DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image to start and play games; it does not bundle one. The project recommends dumping the BIOS from your own console and does not provide BIOS downloads. A BIOS from a different region than the game can cause compatibility problems. DuckStation’s README
A game disc or supported image
DuckStation can read CDs directly and supports several image formats, including BIN/CUE, MAME CHD, single-track ECM, MDS/MDF, CCD, and unencrypted PBP. For some PAL games protected with LibCrypt, you may also need matching SBI subchannel data or an image that includes the relevant subchannel information; missing data can cause a game to hang or crash. The README explains how to supply the required SBI file.

- The USB AC adapter is not included or sold separately. You can use your own USB AC adapter for smart devices, the required specification is 5V/1.0 amp/5W or higher.
Keyboard or controller
A physical controller is optional: DuckStation can use a keyboard to simulate PlayStation controls. It also supports DInput, XInput, and SDL controller backends, so a compatible PC controller is a convenient alternative rather than a requirement.
Optional graphics and convenience features
DuckStation offers hardware rendering through APIs including D3D11, D3D12, OpenGL, Vulkan, and Metal, depending on the platform and build. Optional capabilities include resolution upscaling, true-color rendering, texture filtering and replacement, PGXP geometry improvements, shader chains, save states, rewind, and runahead. Their availability and results depend on the game, device, and configuration; the project warns that some enhancements can cause compatibility issues. Defaults are intended to keep games playable.

Stable releases and preview builds
The project documents two update channels. Stable releases arrive less frequently and have had more testing; preview builds are generated when changes are pushed to the repository and may contain bugs. If you value fewer surprises, choose a stable release when one is available for your platform. Preview builds may be useful for access to newer changes, but they carry a greater risk of regressions.
The live repository and README are the best places to confirm current platform downloads, requirements, supported formats, and setup details, since build availability and features can change.
