Little Nightmares III was developed by Supermassive Games, not Tarsier Studios, which made the first two mainline games. Bandai Namco owns the Little Nightmares intellectual property and published the third game; Embracer Group’s 2019 acquisition of Tarsier did not include the franchise. The official announcements reviewed do not give a specific reason for choosing Supermassive.
Who made each Little Nightmares game?
Tarsier Studios developed the first two mainline entries. When Embracer Group announced its acquisition of Tarsier in December 2019, it described the studio as having created the original Little Nightmares IP and noted that Little Nightmares II was financed by external parties and published by Bandai Namco.

Bandai Namco named Supermassive Games as the developer of Little Nightmares III in 2023. Supermassive also confirmed its role in its own announcement. Bandai Namco is the publisher. The game launched on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Bandai Namco’s game page lists the release and platforms.
Did Embracer’s Tarsier acquisition mean it owned the series?
No. Acquiring a studio and owning a franchise’s intellectual property are different things. Embracer’s 2019 announcement explicitly says, “The Little Nightmares IP is owned by Bandai Namco.” Embracer acquired Tarsier, not the Little Nightmares franchise. Embracer Group’s acquisition announcement sets out that distinction.

Why did Bandai Namco choose Supermassive?
The official announcements establish that Bandai Namco selected Supermassive to develop the third game, but they do not explain the business or creative rationale. They also do not say that Tarsier declined the project or that Embracer’s acquisition caused a contractual or creative dispute. The timing of the acquisition alone is not evidence of a cause.
Is Little Nightmares III still part of the same world?
Yes. In a Bandai Namco Europe interview published November 21, 2023, producer Coralie Feniello called it “a brand-new adventure in the world of Little Nightmares.” The game introduces Low and Alone and takes place in the Spiral. Feniello also said that new players would not need to play the earlier games first. Read the producer interview.

The third game also supports solo play and online co-op. Bandai Namco’s support Q&A says Friend’s Pass allows a friend to join with one purchased copy on supported platforms. Its listed launch support details said cross-platform play between different manufacturers was unsupported and cross-generation play was unavailable at launch; those details may have changed since release. How big is the franchise?
Bandai Namco Entertainment America said in June 2025 that the Little Nightmares franchise had sold 20 million units since the first game’s 2017 release. That is a franchise-wide total, not sales of Little Nightmares III alone. See the publisher’s announcement.

What has happened since launch?
Bandai Namco Europe said the first additional content, The Backstage, became available on June 12, 2026. Read the DLC announcement.
