To check a Pokémon promo card, first identify its exact release, then compare it with reliable references for that same printing and inspect it under bright, even light. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to bright light, but no single visual check proves a card is genuine. For a graded card, verify the certification record and compare it with the card and holder in hand; if doubts remain, ask a specialist trading-card shop or an established authentication provider.
Identify the exact promo before comparing it
Promotional cards come from different releases, languages, and printings, so a useful comparison must match the card being checked. Record its name, promo or set number, language, and any distribution or release details the seller provides. Find a reliable reference for that specific version and compare the artwork, typography, symbols, wording, borders, and surface treatment.
Pokémon’s counterfeit guidance is general advice; it does not provide a promo-by-promo authentication checklist. A similar-looking promo or an image of a different printing is not enough to establish that the card matches a genuine example. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance explains its basic screening advice.
Inspect the card without damaging it
Use bright light as a screening check
Hold the card up to a bright light and look for unusual translucency. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through this way. That makes the check useful for spotting a warning sign, not a conclusive authentication test: passing it does not prove the card is real.

Compare visible details carefully
Under strong, even light, compare the front and back with a reference for the exact printing. Look for differences in text, symbols, alignment, borders, artwork, and finish. An optional 10x jeweler’s loupe can help you examine small details, but magnification alone cannot authenticate a card. PSA describes microscopic pattern alignment as part of advanced authentication work, not as a standalone consumer test.
Do not tear, bend, cut, wet, heat, or chemically test a collectible card. These actions can damage it, and Pokémon’s published guidance does not recommend destructive tests.

If the card is graded, check the record and the physical item
For a PSA-graded card, enter or scan its certification number on PSA’s Cert Verification page. Compare the returned card identity and any available images or details with both the card and holder you are considering. A matching number is not enough on its own: PSA warns that forgers can reuse certification numbers taken from public sources and states, “Verification of certification numbers on the PSA Certification database does not eliminate risk.”
PSA describes its current LightHouse label as having an illumination effect, a UV logo pattern, a fugitive-ink graphic pattern, and a QR code linking to certification verification. It also says its holder is designed to make tampering more apparent. These are PSA-specific features, and label designs change over time; an older genuine holder may not have the current features. See PSA’s security information for its current description.

Choose the right next step if you are still unsure
Pokémon Support recommends asking a shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. This is a sensible first escalation when a basic inspection leaves doubt. For a high-value card, or when you need formal documentation, consider an established authentication and grading provider and check its current terms directly.
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist trading-card shop | An informal in-person evaluation when you need help resolving uncertainty. | Whether a suitable specialist is available locally and what kind of assessment the shop offers. |
| Formal grading or authentication service | A valuable card or a situation where a documented result matters. | Current submission requirements, shipping, fees, turnaround, and what documentation is provided; these vary by provider and were not stated in the cited guidance. |
Neither a visual inspection nor an online certification lookup guarantees that a card offered for sale is genuine. PSA’s 2025 Fraud Report discusses specialist methods including ink-density comparison, microscopic pattern alignment, edge analysis, surface fluorescence, print-registration alignment, and tactile surface analysis. Those are specialist techniques, not a home checklist that a buyer can reliably use to certify a card.
