Avoid overfilling
Do not force extra cards into pockets or pack a binder so tightly that cards are difficult to remove. Ease of access matters: repeated struggling with a tight pocket can make handling less controlled. Store the binder away from direct or intense light.

The Library of Congress advises, for comic-book storage, “A cool (room temperature or below), relatively dry (about 35% relative humidity), clean, and stable environment (avoid attics, basements, and other locations with high risk of leaks and environmental extremes).” It also recommends minimal exposure to all kinds of light and supportive protective enclosures. Storage guides give differing numerical humidity suggestions, and the cited institutional guidance does not establish a Pokémon-card target. A hygrometer may help you understand conditions in a damp or unstable room, but the sources do not validate a particular humidity range for Pokémon cards.

Keep tournament sleeve rules separate from storage advice
Pokémon Organized Play’s Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook dated August 15, 2024 addresses tournament legality and card identification, not long-term preservation. It says, “Only genuine Pokémon Trading Card Game cards may be used at Play! Pokémon events.” For sleeves, the handbook requires that a sleeve enclose a single card and that sleeves in a player’s deck match in color or design, condition, size, and texture. Inner or over sleeves are allowed if they do not affect shuffling. It recommends opaque-backed sleeves because clear sleeves or no sleeves may expose imperfections on card backs: “Pokémon Organized Play strongly recommends the use of sleeves with an opaque back.” Those play requirements do not certify a sleeve or other storage material for long-term preservation.
