How to Make a Game Less Scary With Settings and Accessibility Options

A practical guide to finding game settings that can soften loud scares, motion, content, and gameplay pressure—while explaining what each option can and cannot change.

You can often make a scary game less intense by changing its sound, motion, content, or gameplay settings—but there is no universal “less scary” switch, and options vary by game, edition, platform, and update. Before continuing, check the game’s Accessibility, Audio, Gameplay, and Content Warning menus for controls that address what is bothering you.

Start with the kind of intensity you want to reduce

Look for a setting that changes the specific source of discomfort rather than assuming one option will make the whole game feel safe. A warning can help you decide whether to proceed; sound and motion controls can soften sensory intensity; difficulty and pacing options can reduce pressure. These settings may leave frightening images, themes, or story events unchanged.

  • Surprise or sensitive scenes: look for content warnings, scene controls, or options to obscure or skip content.
  • Loud or sharp audio: check for separate sound sliders, reduced peaks, or controls for particular sound categories.
  • Camera movement or vibration: look for camera shake, motion blur, camera bob, and controller vibration settings.
  • Threat and time pressure: check difficulty, quick-time event, timing, and saving options.
  • Hard-to-follow information: adjust text size, subtitles, contrast, or visual cues where available.

Check content warnings and scene controls

Some games provide advance notice of potentially distressing content or let you change how selected scenes are presented. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 frames this as helping players make informed decisions and customize their experience; it does not call for developers to remove horror content.

In its Dead Space accessibility feature, EA describes an optional warning and a scene-obscuring control. The obscuring effect hides visuals, but audio remains audible, so it does not remove the entire scene. Treat this as a specific example, not a feature every horror game includes.

Turn down intense sounds without losing every cue

If a game offers separate audio controls, try lowering effects, ambience, music, or specific character and enemy sounds individually. This can reduce sudden spikes while keeping other audio information audible. Little Nightmares III is one title-specific example: Bandai Namco describes a Nighttime Mode that blunts loud spikes, plus separate volume controls for music, effects, antagonist cues, and friendly characters in its accessibility feature overview.

When testing a change, adjust one slider at a time in a safe area or pause menu if possible. Lowering all audio can also make dialogue, warnings, or navigation cues harder to hear; subtitles or visual alternatives may help where the game provides them.

Reduce motion and controller vibration

Camera shake, motion blur, camera bob, and vibration can add discomfort or make a scare feel more intense. Check both the game’s accessibility menu and its camera or controller settings; labels differ. Steam’s accessibility feature guidance documents camera-comfort categories, and Bandai Namco says Little Nightmares III includes camera shake and vibration controls.

Try changing one effect at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps. Turning off camera effects may change how movement feels, and reducing vibration removes tactile cues, but the options can be useful when those sensations are part of the problem.

Lower pressure with difficulty and pacing options

If being chased, failing a sequence, or racing a timer is what raises the tension, see whether the game lets you adjust difficulty, timing, quick-time events, or saving. Steam’s accessibility guidance includes adjustable difficulty, play-at-your-own-pace options, and saving at any time as feature categories. The game itself determines which are available.

These settings can make encounters less demanding or give you more time to recover, but they may not change frightening imagery, sound, or themes. If you want a less intense presentation as well as an easier challenge, combine them with audio, motion, or content controls where available.

Make text and cues easier to follow

Look for larger text, subtitle customization, contrast controls, and visual alternatives to audio cues. These features can make it easier to understand dialogue and notice important information, especially if you lower sound or play in a noisy environment. Little Nightmares III’s publisher describes text and menu customization; Steam and PlayStation also list subtitle, audio, and visual accessibility feature categories.

To check before you buy or launch, Steam shows developer-declared accessibility features on game store pages. PlayStation says accessibility tags can appear for supported PS5 and PS4 games when browsing the PlayStation Store on a PS5 console. See PlayStation’s accessibility tags announcement for the platform-specific details. Store listings are a starting point; confirm the options in the version you are playing.

Find the right settings for your game

  1. Open the game’s Accessibility menu first. If it has no relevant options, check Audio, Gameplay, Camera, and Content Warnings.
  2. Identify the main issue—such as loud spikes, a specific scene, camera movement, or time pressure—and change the setting that most directly addresses it.
  3. Resume briefly and assess the change. If it helps only partly, combine it with another relevant control rather than changing everything at once.
  4. If the option is missing or its behavior is unclear, consult the game’s official accessibility guide and check that it applies to your platform, edition, and current update.

If the available controls are not enough, pausing, leaving the scene, or choosing another game are reasonable options. Settings can offer more control, but they cannot guarantee that a particular game will feel comfortable for every player.
