The regions open one after another, but each gives you room to explore before moving on. This is a spoiler-aware route framework, not a verified objective-by-objective walkthrough: the available quest index supports the region order and a few specific pointers, but not a reliable complete quest checklist.
How Avowed’s main-story route works
Avowed is divided into four sequential regions rather than one continuous open world. Obsidian describes each region as open to exploration within its boundaries, while the story carries you onward through them. That means the practical route is to pursue the main objective in your current region, take any optional detours you want, and then continue when the story advances you. Xbox Wire’s January 24, 2025 interview with the developers discusses this structure and the discoveries available through exploration.
A Game8 quest index lists 12 main quests, counting Pulling Back the Veil as an optional main quest during The Heart of the Living Lands. The index’s full ordered checklist is not available here, so the route below avoids inventing quest names or exact objective sequences.
Recommended regional route
1. Dawnshore
Begin in Dawnshore and follow the main story objectives presented in your journal. If you want to recruit the second companion earlier, a Game8 walkthrough snippet recommends starting Report to the Ambassador before An Untimely End. Treat this as an efficiency option, not a mandatory order or a known lockout: the available information does not establish that delaying either quest prevents recruitment.

- Before leaving the region, decide whether you want to pursue nearby side content and conversations. These can add context or reveal different ways a quest can resolve.
- Bring companions along when practical; they can react to choices in main and side quests.
2. Emerald Stair
Continue to Emerald Stair when the main story takes you there. Prioritize the objective in your journal, then explore any optional locations or conversations you care about before advancing. No verified quest-by-quest sequence is established here for this region, so use the in-game journal rather than treating an unverified list as a definitive route.
3. Shatterscarp
Follow the critical path into Shatterscarp and use the same approach: complete the current main-story objective, then make any optional stops before leaving. Choices can have consequences beyond the immediate exchange, and companions may respond to decisions along the way.

4. Galawain’s Tusks
Galawain’s Tusks is the fourth and final region in the stated sequence. Follow the main objectives as they appear and make any remaining exploration or companion-quest choices before the endgame, if those stories matter to you.

How to think about choices and companions
Not every dialogue choice changes the whole story. The developers describe consequences at different scales: an immediate exchange, effects that unfold across quests, or wider impacts on people and settlements. Region Director Berto Ritger said choices can affect “entire settlements, individual people, groups of people — the whole spectrum basically.” Narrative Designer Kate Dollarhyde described a preference to “leave as much as possible for the player to discover,” while Game Director Carrie Patel noted that unpredictable consequences can make choices more rewarding. The four companions join as the story progresses, and they can react to decisions in both main and side quests. Some companion quests connect to the main story. If you care about those relationships, avoid treating every optional interaction as disposable; if you are focused on finishing the critical path, you can prioritize the journal’s main objectives instead.

A Game8 search excerpt reports that dialogue during the council in The Siege of Paradis and the outcome of the fight with Lodwyn affect the ending. It also refers to regional outcomes such as Solace Keep. The complete ending guide was not available to confirm exact dialogue selections or a best-ending checklist, so this is not a reliable recipe for a particular ending. Make a separate save before major endgame decisions if you want the option to revisit them.
