Full spoilers for Shadow of the Erdtree, including its final encounter and post-fight memory. Miquella enters the Land of Shadow to pursue godhood and establish a new order he promises will be gentler. To get there, he deliberately abandons parts of himself—including St. Trina, described in game-text reference material as his other half—and seeks to make Radahn his consort. The expansion presents compassion as Miquella’s ideal, but also makes the cost of his plan, and the uncertainty around its vow, impossible to ignore.
Who is Miquella, and why does he go to the Land of Shadow?
Bandai Namco identifies Miquella as an Empyrean and a child of Marika and Radagon. In the base game, he is presumed to have been stolen away by Mohg. Shadow of the Erdtree takes up that mystery by drawing the player after Miquella into the Realm of Shadow.

The expansion’s official story text says Miquella departs for the Land of Shadow, “Divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage. Of all things Golden.” It frames this departure as part of his pursuit of godhood and a new order. The publisher’s pre-release account said his reason for entering the Realm of Shadow was then unclear; the expansion’s story supplies the larger purpose, even as it leaves important details unresolved.

What does Miquella give up?
His journey is a deliberate stripping-away, not simply a move to a new territory. The official prologue names flesh, strength, lineage, and “all things Golden” among what Miquella casts aside. The expansion’s scattered traces of his abandoned parts make that self-severance central to the route toward godhood: he seeks a new order by relinquishing ties to the one he leaves behind.
That process has a particularly personal consequence in St. Trina. Eldenpedia’s transcription of game-text reference material describes her as the other half Miquella discarded during the journey. Thiollier, one of Miquella’s followers, is devoted to St. Trina, giving that loss a human witness within the group. The text supports calling Trina Miquella’s discarded other half, but it does not settle every metaphysical question about whether she is a separate person, an alter ego, or a literal counterpart.

Why is Radahn Miquella’s promised consort?
The in-game Remembrance, transcribed by Eldenpedia, says that as children Miquella saw Radahn as a lord whose strength and kindness contrasted with their afflicted selves. Miquella wished Radahn would become his king consort. The expansion’s official story text later says, “And now Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord.”
In the final encounter, Miquella says Radahn’s soul will return so he may be his consort. The post-fight memory then shows Miquella asking Radahn to honor their vow: “Lord brother. I’m going to be a god. If we honor our part of the vow, Promise me you’ll be my consort. I’ll make the world a gentler place.” These lines establish the childhood wish, the promised-consort role, and the return of Radahn’s soul. They do not spell out every term of the vow or conclusively establish the full question of Radahn’s consent.

Bandai Namco names Leda, Redmane Freyja, Hornsent, Moore, Thiollier, Sir Ansbach, and Dryleaf Dane among the figures who follow Miquella. They do not form a group with a single history or uncomplicated allegiance. Their different backgrounds help show how varied the ties to Miquella are.
| Follower | Relevant background or connection |
|---|---|
| Redmane Freyja | Former member of Radahn’s imperial guard. |
| Hornsent | Resents the Erdtree, yet helps the player find Miquella’s abandoned parts. |
| Moore | Former follower of Malenia. |
| Thiollier | Devoted to St. Trina. |
| Sir Ansbach | Formerly served Mohg. |
| Dryleaf Dane | A monk. |
| Leda | Named by Bandai Namco as one of Miquella’s followers; the cited overview does not give a comparable prior allegiance or background detail. |
Their prior allegiances and personal ties complicate any picture of Miquella’s followers as a unified movement. Source: Bandai Namco’s follower overview.
Is Miquella’s promised world really gentler?
Miquella’s stated ideal is compassion. In the final encounter dialogue transcribed by Eldenpedia, he promises, “A thousand year voyage, guided by compassion.” In the post-fight memory, he says he will make the world gentler. Those words explain what he hopes his order will be, not proof of what life under it would actually become.
The gap between promise and method matters. Miquella’s route involves giving up parts of himself, and the story leaves the vow’s full terms and Radahn’s consent unresolved. The game does not give a definitive account of the moral outcome of the order Miquella wants to establish. It presents a compassionate promise alongside coercive power and profound self-erasure, leaving players to judge whether the means can deliver the world he describes.
Can you play Shadow of the Erdtree without Elden Ring?
No. Bandai Namco says the expansion requires the ELDEN RING base game. Its official product information lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam. Check that the base game and expansion are available for the same platform and in your region before buying; the expansion is additional content, not a standalone game.
