The RPi Chess Game Written in Assembly Language is a graphical, two-player chess project that runs bare-metal on a Raspberry Pi: it starts without a conventional operating system, displays the board over HDMI, and takes moves through six GPIO-connected buttons. Its creators also wrote a small, restricted assembler in C for the project. The repository documents a historical build process, but does not confirm support for currently sold Raspberry Pi models.
What the Raspberry Pi assembly chess project is
Xu Ji, Bora Mollamustafaoglu, and Gun Pinyo created the project as a first-year C project at Imperial College London. It is not a desktop chess application: the game runs directly on Raspberry Pi hardware without an operating system and presents a colourful graphical board. A Make: article published July 3, 2013 described the game as interfacing with the Pi GPU.
The repository contains the project report and presentation, game source, and assembler materials. Make: reported at the time that the game was about 15,000 lines; that is the publication’s approximate historical figure, not a current line-count measurement.
How the game is controlled and displayed
The README specifies an HDMI-connected screen and six momentary push buttons wired to GPIO. The documented button assignments are:

The listed additional components are a breadboard, six 10 kΩ resistors, six 1 kΩ resistors, and male-female and male-male jumper wires. These are the repository’s documented requirements; they are not evidence that the same wiring and software will work unchanged on every Pi generation.
Why the project uses a custom assembler
The team wrote a limited assembler in C as part of the assignment. In Make:’s 2013 account, the assembler was based on ARM7 assembly, supported a restricted set of instructions, and used labels for variable names. This was a project-specific tool rather than a general-purpose assembler claim.

One creator, posting as xj112358 on the Raspberry Pi forum, described the effort this way: “My two friends and myself have successfully written a chess game for the Pi. It’s a graphical game with a colourful chess board, so we interface with the GPU and whatnot, and we do it all in assembly without an OS running on it.” The available attribution establishes the forum handle, but not the poster’s personal name or formal role.
Is it a chess engine or a two-player game?
The authors described it as a two-player game and said they had not written an AI at the time. It should therefore not be presented as a computer opponent or chess engine. The available project descriptions do not establish playing strength or adjustable difficulty.

- 【What you Get】You will get 1*Pi 5 8GB Single Board,1*RasTech Case,1*Active Cooler,1*Screwdriver,1*Installation instructions,12-month free warranty, lifetime service, 24-hour prompt and friendly response.
- 【More Connectors】There are two USB 3.0 ports(5Gbps simultaneously) and two USB 2.0 ports, which triple total bandwidth ,support any combination of up to two cameras or displays. Peak SD card performance is doubled through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode. It provides a smooth desktop experience for you. Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
How the repository says to build it
The README’s documented workflow is to build a kernel image and copy it to the SD card’s boot partition:
- Open a terminal in the repository’s
programsdirectory. - Run
make chess. The README says this generateskernel.img. - Replace the image in the SD card’s boot partition with the generated
kernel.img. - Connect the HDMI display and wire the six buttons to the GPIO pins specified in the README.
The README says the provided assembler binaries were for x86 and ARM, and that assembler source was withheld at the time. Those notes describe the repository as documented; they do not guarantee that current toolchains, boot procedures, or Raspberry Pi hardware will accept the project without changes.

What is known about current Raspberry Pi compatibility
The repository’s instructions describe a historical boot-image process and do not identify current Raspberry Pi models as supported. The available sources provide no model-by-model compatibility list and no present-day hardware test results. Treat this as an archival project to investigate, not a confirmed plug-and-play build for a newly purchased board.
