Looking for an action RPG with good exploration, combat, and story? Compare those qualities separately before choosing: the best fit depends on which matters most to you and what trade-offs you will accept. A game can excel at discovery while asking you to piece its plot together, or foreground a guided narrative while offering a different kind of combat.
Start by ranking what matters to you
Put combat, exploration, and story in priority order. Then decide what friction you are willing to accept in each area: demanding fights, limited guidance, or a narrative that leaves interpretation to you, for example. This is more useful than relying on a broad “best RPG” label or a single review score, which may not reflect your preferences.
Use the same questions for every game you consider:
- Combat: What actions do you perform, and how much do timing, positioning, abilities, or build planning matter? How costly are mistakes?
- Exploration: Does the game reward wandering and observation, or mainly direct you between marked objectives? What does it ask you to discover?
- Story: Is the plot presented through scenes and quests, or assembled from conversations, discoveries, and clues?
Compare combat by the decisions it asks you to make
Combat is not just a matter of whether a game feels “fast” or “hard.” Consider the actions you will repeat, the choices available during a fight, and how much the game expects you to learn from mistakes.

Elden Ring: measured fights that punish carelessness
GameSpot describes Elden Ring combat as measured, with enemies that punish careless play. That description may appeal if you enjoy paying attention to enemy behavior and choosing your moment rather than attacking without regard for the response. It is a reviewer’s characterization, not a universal difficulty rating.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: vocation-specific play and reactive enemies
PlayStation describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG with vocation-specific combat and a customizable main Pawn. Its official page says enemies “will learn your tricks and react to them.” Treat that as the publisher’s feature description, not an independent comparative verdict about combat quality.
When comparing games, look for concrete details about the actions, abilities, enemy responses, and consequences of mistakes. A description of a feature does not by itself tell you whether you will enjoy using it.

Judge exploration by discovery and guidance, not map size
A large world does not automatically mean satisfying exploration. Ask whether the game makes discovery central, how much it tells you where to go, and whether finding things through observation is part of the appeal.

GameSpot’s Elden Ring review emphasizes freedom to explore and puts discovery at the center of the experience. That can suit players who like to follow curiosity rather than receive constant direction. The cited description does not establish how much guidance every player will want, so consider whether that style sounds inviting or frustrating to you.
Compare how the story reaches the player
A compelling premise is only part of the decision. The delivery style matters: some players want a clearly presented plot and prominent narrative quests, while others enjoy interpreting fragments and clues.

Elden Ring: a story pieced together
GameSpot describes Elden Ring’s story as delivered in fragments for the player to piece together. Choose with that style in mind if you enjoy inference; if you want the narrative spelled out directly, check further reviews or gameplay descriptions for evidence that the delivery suits you.
The Witcher 3: a narrative-driven experience
PC Gamer’s review of the 2015 release calls The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt narrative-driven and describes real-time combat using attacks, effects and buffs, evasion, and sign abilities. This is an editorial review of that release, not a current technical assessment of every later edition. “Narrative-driven” is a useful clue about emphasis, but it does not guarantee that every player will like the story or its pacing.

The examples do not have equivalent evidence for every dimension, and the sources use different methods and dates. There is no common published statistic here that measures combat, exploration, and story across all three games; percentages, hours, or a composite ranking would imply a comparison that has not been established.
Check platform and edition before you buy
Once a game matches your preferences, confirm that the listing is for your platform, region, and intended edition. Game pages establish game identities and describe features; they do not establish current retailer stock, price, or which edition is right for your platform. Check the current retailer listing and the relevant platform store before purchasing.
