Pokémon Go’s Legendary Heroes event ran from September 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. through October 1, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time. It has ended, so its bonuses, event encounters, raid lineup and Web Store offer are no longer available as event features. The main choice was a free branching Timed Research path: Sword or Shield. That choice determined the Collection Challenge and which Pokémon Incense attracted during the event.
At a glance: what the event offered
- Dates: September 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. to October 1, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

- Evolution: Koffing could evolve into Galarian Weezing during the event.
- Featured five-star raid: Zacian, with the announcement promoting the event as the first chance to encounter Shiny Zacian in Pokémon GO.
- Path choice: Sword or Shield changed the event Incense encounters and Collection Challenge.
These are historical event details, not current bonuses or encounters. Pokémon GO’s event announcement contains the original event terms.
Which path should you choose?
There was no universally best option in the event announcement. Choose based on which path’s Incense Pokémon and Collection Challenge better matched your collection goals. The choice affected both, so compare the lists before selecting a branch.
| Path | Pokémon attracted to Incense |
|---|---|
| Sword | Seedot, Scraggy, Gothita, Deino, Swirlix and Passimian |
| Shield | Larvitar, Lotad, Croagunk, Solosis, Spritzee and Oranguru |
The announcement said these Incense Pokémon could appear in shiny form; that meant a chance, not a guarantee. The lists describe event-period encounters only.

Timed Research, Collection Challenges and Field Research
Branching Timed Research
The free Timed Research offered a Sword Path or Shield Path. It awarded items, XP, Stardust and encounters with event-themed Pokémon. The selected branch also determined which Collection Challenge and related encounters applied.
Collection Challenges
The event’s catch- and trade-focused Collection Challenges awarded XP and encounters with event-themed Pokémon. Their path-specific rewards followed the Sword or Shield selection described above.

The announcement described this event as the first opportunity to encounter Shiny Zacian in Pokémon GO, subject to chance. This was an event-specific debut claim, not a promise that a raid would yield a shiny Pokémon.
For general raid preparation, Niantic’s Raid Pass help page advises collecting the daily free Raid Pass. Its Raid Hour guidance recommends tackling difficult bosses with a group. These are general tips, not special mechanics of Legendary Heroes.
