On a PEGI game listing, the age number gives the age category; the descriptor icons and text explain content elements or interactive risks behind the rating. Violence, Bad Language and Sex are not complete scene-by-scene reports, so read them alongside the age category and the advice for the specific game.
What the PEGI age number and descriptors tell you
The PEGI age category is the system’s age guidance for a game. Descriptors explain why that category was assigned by identifying relevant content elements or interactive risks. A descriptor does not, by itself, tell you how often something happens, how prominent it is, or every detail of its presentation.
That distinction matters when comparing games: the same descriptor can accompany different kinds of content, while the age category supplies wider context. PEGI’s general definitions are not a substitute for checking the current entry for an individual title.
What does the PEGI Violence descriptor mean?
PEGI’s official Violence descriptor says, “The game contains depictions of violence.” Its meaning depends on how the violence is presented and who or what is targeted, not simply on whether violence exists.

- PEGI 7: Violence, if present, can only be non-realistic or non-detailed.
- PEGI 12: The guidance allows fantasy violence or non-realistic violence towards human-like characters.
- PEGI 16 or 18: PEGI describes violence at these categories as increasingly realistic.
PEGI’s broader guidance also identifies gross violence, apparently motiveless killing, or violence towards defenceless characters as grounds associated with PEGI 18. These distinctions show why the icon alone is not a simple severity score: fantasy style, realism, target and context all matter.
What does PEGI 12 mean for bad language?
PEGI’s official Bad Language descriptor says, “The game contains bad language.” The guidance distinguishes the strength of the language by age category:
Rank #2
- PEGI 3: No bad language should be heard.
- PEGI 12: Mild swearing may be present.
- PEGI 16: Strong language may be present.
The descriptor identifies language as a content element, but it does not specify the exact words, frequency, or context for every game. For those details, consult the title’s own PEGI advice.
What does the PEGI Sex descriptor mean?
The Sex descriptor covers different kinds of sexual content, ranging from innuendo to explicit activity. PEGI’s general guidance describes the categories this way:

- PEGI 12: Sexual innuendo or sexual posturing may be present.
- PEGI 16: Erotic nudity or sexual intercourse without visible genitals may be present.
- PEGI 18: Explicit sexual activity falls into this category.
Nudity alone does not automatically mean a game needs the Sex descriptor: PEGI says nudity in a non-sexual context does not require it.
Why the age category still matters
These three descriptors do not cover every factor that can affect a PEGI category. For example, PEGI says prominent gambling themes can be rated PEGI 12, while simulation of casino-style games of chance is PEGI 18. The age category therefore provides broader context than any one content icon.
PEGI gives system guidance, not a household-specific verdict about whether a game is suitable for a particular child. Parents and players may also weigh a child’s age, experience and sensitivities when deciding what to play.

- Find the game’s current PEGI entry. Search for the exact title in PEGI’s official games database: https://pegi.info/search-pegi.
- Read the age category and every listed descriptor. Consider the number together with the content icons and their text rather than interpreting one icon in isolation.
- Use the title-specific advice for detail. General definitions explain the system; they do not establish every scene or interaction in a particular game.
PEGI’s official explanation of the labels is available at https://pegi.info/what-do-the-labels-mean. That page was checked on 4 October 2026; consult its current version and the current game entry, since PEGI can update its guidance.
