GamesBeat described the figure as beating estimates, but its August 6 article did not identify an estimate or forecast provider. Roblox’s earnings release does not publish an analyst DAU consensus. Separately, the company’s revenue and bookings both exceeded its own prior guidance.
What Roblox reported for Q2 2024
In its August 1, 2024 results release, Roblox reported growth in users, engagement and financial measures for the quarter ended June 30. The company defines DAUs in its reporting context as average daily active users; the figure should not be read as a count of unique people across the quarter.

Bookings is a non-GAAP measure that Roblox says should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for GAAP results. The company also reported a consolidated net loss of $207.2 million and a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $205.9 million. Net cash from operating activities was $151.4 million. Free cash flow, another non-GAAP measure, was $111.6 million, compared with negative $95.5 million in Q2 2023. Roblox cautions against treating non-GAAP measures such as bookings and free cash flow as substitutes for GAAP measures.
Did DAUs actually beat estimates?
GamesBeat’s August 6, 2024 report characterized Roblox’s daily-user result as beating estimates. However, that article does not state the estimated DAU figure or name the source of the estimate, and Roblox’s August 1 release reports the company’s results without an analyst-consensus comparison. The available information therefore supports reporting the 79.5 million result and GamesBeat’s characterization, but not a quantified claim about how far DAUs exceeded a specified analyst forecast.

That distinction matters because “estimates” can refer to different benchmarks. Roblox’s own quarterly guidance is a company outlook, not an analyst consensus—and the company’s Q2 guidance covered revenue and bookings, not a DAU target.
Revenue and bookings topped Roblox’s prior guidance
Roblox’s May 9, 2024 Q1 release forecast Q2 revenue of $855 million to $880 million and bookings of $870 million to $900 million. Its Q2 results came in above both ranges.

The comparison shows that revenue and bookings surpassed Roblox’s own earlier outlook. It does not establish that DAUs beat analyst estimates, since the guidance did not specify a user-count forecast.
How an accounting estimate affected revenue
Roblox changed its estimate of the average life of a paying user from 28 months to 27 months at the start of Q2. Based on deferred revenue and deferred cost of revenue balances as of March 31, 2024, the company said the change increased Q2 revenue by $58.9 million and cost of revenue by $12.4 million. This disclosed accounting estimate affected reported revenue; it was not a change to the DAU metric.

In the results release, founder and CEO David Baszucki said: “The dynamic Roblox content ecosystem is unique and our platform continues to attract users of all ages from across the globe.” He also said the company would continue investing in the core platform to help creators build “better and safer experiences” and reach more people. These are management’s descriptions of its platform and plans, not independent assessments of user composition or safety.
