You can travel with him to Moonrise Towers or side with him during the Harper ambush, but neither choice adds him to your roster. Those scenes are quest outcomes, not recruitment. Kar’niss is not listed in the game-reference companion overview.
What happens if you travel with Kar’niss?
Kar’niss guides the Cult of the Absolute convoy and carries a working Moonlantern. If you accept his escort, he can lead your party safely to the front entrance of Moonrise Towers. The journey does not make him a companion or place him among characters you can take adventuring. The convoy route is a quest interaction.
You can also attack Kar’niss or try to obtain the Moonlantern without taking the escort. Which dialogue options appear can depend on how you reached the encounter and what you said earlier, so there is no single sequence that applies to every playthrough.
Who can you side with at the Harper ambush?
At the ambush, the main choice is whether to help Kar’niss and the convoy or turn against them with the Harpers. Depending on the encounter state and your dialogue, you can also try to persuade Kar’niss to hand over the Moonlantern without a fight, or attack. The encounter walkthrough describes ways to initiate the conversation, including making your party known and, in one route, having a hidden party member contact him telepathically after a Wisdom check.

What happens to Kar’niss later?
His later appearance depends on what happened to him and the convoy. If he survives to Moonrise Towers, he later fights alongside Ketheric. If you persuade him to leave without the Moonlantern, he and the convoy can later appear as shadow-cursed undead. These are story appearances, not companion recruitment. The character reference describes these later outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a way to recruit him with a mod or exploit?
The standard-game references do not establish an official modded or exploit-based method for adding Kar’niss to the party. Treat claims of such a method as unverified rather than as a normal recruitment route. Larian’s gameplay FAQ explains recruitment in general, but does not specifically address Kar’niss.
