There is no universal yes-or-no answer. For U.S. players, Sony’s software terms prohibit emulating covered Sony software and bypassing security protections, while U.S. copyright law and a Ninth Circuit case address narrower, fact-specific copying situations. Owning a PS3 disc does not, by itself, settle whether making a game copy, obtaining or extracting system software, or using a particular emulator is lawful. This is a U.S.-focused overview, not legal advice for an individual case.
What “Demon’s Souls on PC” means here
The evidence discussed here concerns the original PlayStation 3 version of Demon’s Souls running through the RPCS3 PS3 emulator. It does not establish an official native PC release. The game also has a separate PlayStation 5 remake; that is a different edition on a different platform.
RPCS3’s compatibility list includes the PS3 game and labels its entry “Playable.” The entry shows an update date of 2020-05-04. That is a dated project status, not a promise about present-day compatibility, hardware, settings, or performance; compatibility listings can change. No game was tested for this article.
What Sony’s U.S. software terms say
Sony’s U.S. Software EULA prohibits emulating its covered software, copying it without express prior written consent, and using means to bypass or disable encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. The EULA says violating these conditions immediately voids the license. Sony’s U.S. Product Software License Agreement also treats use of the software as licensed rather than as ownership of the software itself, and restricts copying, unauthorized software or hardware, and circumvention.

Sony’s agreement puts the ownership distinction this way: “All rights to use the Software are granted by license only, and you are not granted any ownership rights, title, or interests in the Software.” These are Sony’s contractual terms for covered software. They are not a court ruling that resolves every emulator or every user’s conduct, and they do not replace the law that applies in a particular jurisdiction.
Does owning a PS3 disc make a game copy legal?
No blanket permission follows from buying a disc. Buying a physical copy is not the same as acquiring the game’s copyright or an unconditional right to reproduce its software. Whether a particular additional copy is permitted is a separate question from whether you own the disc.

The retrieved 2010 edition of 17 U.S.C. §117(a) describes limited circumstances in which the owner of a copy of a computer program may make or authorize another copy or adaptation: when it is an essential step in using the program with a machine and is used in no other manner, or when it is solely archival, with archival copies destroyed if continued possession of the program ceases to be rightful. Those conditions should not be reduced to “I own the disc, so any ISO is legal.” The statutory source available for this overview is a 2010 Code edition; its current codification has not been independently verified here.
What the BIOS issue—and Connectix—does and does not establish
A BIOS or other firmware is software, not simply a neutral setting or accessory. Questions about where a copy came from, how it was made, and whether a protection was bypassed are distinct from the question of whether an emulator can run a game. The sources here do not establish one universally lawful method for obtaining or extracting system software for a consumer setup.

In Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp., the Ninth Circuit considered intermediate copying of Sony’s original PlayStation BIOS during development of the Virtual Game Station emulator. The case is relevant to emulator development and reverse engineering, but it does not decide every consumer’s BIOS download, dump, distribution, or gameplay scenario. It is not blanket permission to obtain or share BIOS files, and it does not answer the separate question of compliance with Sony’s software terms. The case’s specific facts and jurisdiction matter.
Does a game-preservation exemption cover personal emulation?
No general private-user exemption is established by the preservation rule discussed here. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 37 CFR §201.40 includes an exemption for qualifying libraries, archives, and museums, subject to stated conditions, for specified access, copying, or modification related to personal local gameplay. Its institutional scope and conditions do not make it a general authorization for an individual to download game or BIOS files.

What determines the answer for an individual player?
The legally relevant details can include the jurisdiction, the applicable software license or edition, how the game and firmware copies were obtained or made, whether a protection was circumvented, and the specific use. Sony’s terms, the statutory copying provision, the preservation regulation, and the Connectix decision address different questions; none alone supplies a universal answer for every setup. Anyone seeking a definitive assessment of their own conduct needs advice based on their location and facts.
