Discovery ranked it fifth for the year. It did, however, have the year’s biggest U.S. opening weekend, and its global box office made it the highest-grossing live-action movie based on a video game, according to Guinness World Records. Its scale is easier to explain when those different measures are kept separate.
What “biggest” means in this case
The answer depends on the measure. A Minecraft Movie opened to $162,753,003 domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2026 booklet reviewing the 2025 box office calls its $162.8 million domestic debut the year’s largest opening weekend, but ranks the film fifth worldwide among 2025 movies. So the claim that it would be the biggest-grossing movie of 2025 is not supported; the biggest-opening claim is.

For its all-time category standing, Guinness World Records lists the film as the highest-grossing live-action movie based on a videogame. Guinness gives a worldwide gross of $961,187,780 as of February 25, 2026, attributing the figure to The Numbers. Box Office Mojo lists a different worldwide total, $960,387,780, in its database accessed October 5, 2026. These are separate source records, not a single reconciled total. Guinness also records a $313.7 million worldwide videogame-film opening through April 6, 2025. Guinness World Records
Why the movie had such a large opening
A game world audiences could recognize
The film brought Minecraft’s distinctive world into live action, including the Overworld and Steve. Warner Bros. Pictures describes it as the first big-screen live-action adaptation of the game. The official synopsis follows Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn, who pass through a portal into the Overworld and must work with Steve to survive and get home. A recognizable setting gave the movie a clear point of connection for game fans, though familiarity alone cannot be shown to have caused its box-office result. Warner Bros. A group adventure suited to a broad audience
The premise is a team adventure built around imagination, survival, and working together. The Numbers lists the film as PG, with a running time of 100 minutes. That positioning made it accessible to younger moviegoers and families while keeping the game world central. It is a plausible part of the film’s appeal, not proof that family interest drove attendance.
Opening-weekend audience reporting offers a snapshot, not a profile of every person who saw the film: The Associated Press reported that about 62% of the opening audience was male and 64% was under 25. AP also reported a B+ CinemaScore and four out of five PostTrak stars. These figures describe the surveys and audience reported at the time, rather than universal measures of audience response. It was positioned as a theatrical event
Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian called the movie a “must-see theatrical event” in AP’s opening-weekend coverage. He also said, “Awareness was off the charts.” That is his contemporary assessment, not a measured awareness score. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Michael DeLuca likewise described the appeal as “earnest, entertaining, joyous cinema” and said people wanted “an escape, especially when it involves the whole family.” These comments help explain how industry figures interpreted the moment; they do not establish a single cause for the result.

A wide release put the event in reach
Warner Bros. opened the film in 4,263 domestic locations, according to AP; The Numbers records 4,263 opening theaters and a peak of 4,289. AP also reported 36,000 international screens. A broad launch gave a large audience the opportunity to see the film immediately, but distribution scale should be treated as part of the opening conditions—not as a standalone explanation for attendance. The official site says the film opened internationally beginning April 2, 2025, and in North American cinemas and IMAX on April 4. It was distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, with Legendary East in China.

Box Office Mojo records a $424,087,780 domestic cumulative gross, compared with the $162,753,003 domestic opening. The opening was therefore a major start, not the entirety of the domestic total. The gap shows that the film continued earning after its debut, but the figures by themselves do not establish whether word of mouth, repeat viewing, or any other specific factor sustained the run.
The opening estimates reported on Sunday were lower than the final domestic figure. AP initially reported estimated debuts of $157 million domestically and $301 million worldwide; those were Sunday estimates, not final totals. The final domestic opening recorded by Box Office Mojo was $162,753,003.

How the 2025 result compares with the original forecast
The title’s prediction gets one important thing right and one wrong. A Minecraft Movie was the year’s domestic opening-weekend leader, and it became a record-setting live-action videogame adaptation by worldwide gross. But Warner Bros. Discovery’s year-end ranking places it fifth worldwide among 2025 releases, not first. “Biggest” is accurate for its U.S. opening and its videogame-film category record; it is not accurate as a description of the year’s top worldwide gross.
The film was directed by Jared Hess and stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black, alongside Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Warner Bros. Pictures’ official site identifies it as the first big-screen live-action Minecraft adaptation; The Numbers lists its PG rating and 100-minute runtime.
