Bulbasaur takes the top spot in this ranking of all nine Grass-type starter Pokémon, with Rowlet and Treecko close behind. The order is subjective, not an official verdict: it weighs memorable design and silhouette, a distinctive concept, the appeal of each Pokémon’s broader evolutionary idea, and the affection or nostalgia it can inspire. It does not rank battle strength; that would depend on the game, format, and team.
How this ranking works
The roster is Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treecko, Turtwig, Snivy, Chespin, Rowlet, Grookey, and Sprigatito—the nine Grass-type starters listed in Pokémon’s official Pokédex. The Pokédex confirms the names and entries, not their order here. Each placement is an editorial preference based on the first-stage design and the promise or impression of its wider character concept. Your own favorite may land somewhere else.
The nine Grass starters, ranked
-
Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur earns first place for a compact, immediately recognizable design that makes the Grass connection feel integral to the Pokémon rather than an accessory. The seed on its back gives the character a clear identity and a sense of growth built right into its silhouette. It is an especially satisfying choice if you value a starter concept that feels complete from the moment you meet it.
-
Rowlet
Rowlet’s round owl shape is distinctive at a glance, and its leafy bow-tie detail makes the Grass theme charming without crowding the design. It balances an approachable, cuddly look with a memorable animal concept. For a ranking focused on first impressions and character appeal, it is an easy choice near the top.

-
Treecko
Treecko stands out by taking a sleeker, more self-assured approach than the softer, rounder designs on this list. Its lizard-like silhouette feels nimble and confident, giving it a different kind of appeal from the more overtly cute starters. It ranks third for a clear visual identity that does not rely on extra ornament.
-
Sprigatito
Sprigatito has an instantly legible grass-cat concept and a bright, expressive face. Pokémon’s official news describes it as the “Grass Cat Pokémon” and an “attention-seeking” character in a 2023 announcement about Paldean first-partner plush. Those labels capture the lively personality that helps it stand out among the nine. See Pokémon’s 2023 announcement; it describes that release at the time, not current product availability.

-
Turtwig
Turtwig’s grounded, earthy look is its strength: it feels like a small creature shaped by its natural surroundings. The simple, sturdy concept offers a welcome contrast to more polished or fanciful designs. It lands in the middle here because its appeal is quieter, not because it lacks character.
-
Snivy
Snivy brings poise and elegance to a group filled with round, playful, or cuddly characters. Its composed expression gives it a distinct personality before you know anything else about it. That restraint is appealing, though it makes the design feel less immediately warm than the entries above it.

-
Chikorita
Chikorita’s gentle, uncomplicated design has a soft charm, with the leaf on its head serving as a clean visual signature. It is easy to imagine why someone might choose it for its sweetness and calm presence. It ranks lower only because, against this particular roster, its silhouette makes a subtler impression.
-
Grookey
Grookey is energetic and playful, with a lively character concept that suits fans who gravitate toward expressive personalities. Its music-adjacent associations add to that sense of motion and fun. The look is appealing, but it does not feel quite as singular to me as the higher-ranked designs.

-
Chespin
Chespin closes the list with an acorn-inspired idea that is genuinely distinctive. Its proportions and overall look are more divisive than the designs above it, so whether it clicks may depend on your taste. A lower placement here reflects that personal reaction, not an objective flaw; fans drawn to its unusual charm could easily put it much higher.
Which Grass starter should you pick?
For character design alone, start with the one whose silhouette and personality appeal to you: Bulbasaur for an iconic plant-creature concept, Rowlet for a charming animal design, Treecko for a sleek look, or Sprigatito for a playful grass-cat identity. This list cannot tell you which one will perform best in a particular game or competitive format; the ranking does not compare battle stats or tested teams.
