Claiming a PlayStation Plus monthly game adds it to your library, but it does not make it a permanent purchase. You can download and play it while your membership is active; after the paid membership period ends, the game becomes unavailable even if it is still installed or listed in your library. Turning off auto-renewal does not end access early: benefits continue through the period you already paid for.

Monthly games and catalog games work differently

PlayStation Plus offers two kinds of game access that are easy to confuse. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus games FAQ says monthly games can be played “as long as you have an active membership plan.” In contrast, games in the Extra and Premium Game Catalog, and the Classics Catalog where available, are accessible as part of the relevant tier rather than as permanent entitlements created by adding them to your library.

Catalog availability changes: Sony says some games have announced removal dates, so check the live catalog in your region for a specific title rather than relying on an old list.

What changes when your membership ends

Sony’s UK PlayStation Plus cancellation guidance says that once the subscription ends, access to benefits such as monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer is lost. A monthly game you claimed at no extra cost is therefore unavailable to play after expiry; the support guidance does not say that it is deleted from your account or library.

If you have only canceled auto-renewal, check the membership end date shown for your account. Sony says benefits continue through the end of the already-purchased payment period, so access does not necessarily stop on the day you cancel renewal.

What happens to catalog games and their add-ons

A catalog game can become unavailable even while your membership remains active if Sony removes it from the service. Having previously added or downloaded it does not turn catalog access into a permanent claim. The game must still be in the catalog and included with your current tier.

Paid DLC and add-ons tied to an unavailable catalog game cannot be used while you cannot access the base game. Sony’s Game Catalog and Classics Catalog FAQ says those add-ons can be used again if you resubscribe or buy the game. Resubscribing will not restore access to a title that has left the catalog; buying the game is the alternative Sony identifies for that case.

What you keep after expiry

Sony’s UK cancellation page distinguishes subscription benefits from purchases and certain redeemed items. It says that games bought at a PlayStation Plus discount remain yours, as do redeemed PS Plus packs and avatars. Those are not the same as a monthly game claimed at no extra cost, which remains subject to an active membership.

How to get access again

If you canceled renewal but your paid period has not ended: check the membership end date in your account. Your benefits should continue until then, according to Sony’s UK cancellation guidance.
If a monthly game is unavailable after expiry: activate an eligible PlayStation Plus membership again. Access depends on the membership being active.
If a catalog game is unavailable: confirm it is still in your region’s catalog and included in your current tier. If it has been removed, Sony says buying the game is an option for using its associated purchased add-ons.

If you plan to buy a game later, keep your save data. Sony’s cited support pages do not comprehensively establish every condition for retaining or restoring saves, so do not assume a particular save will always be available.
