A padlock on a PlayStation Plus game can mean a license needs syncing, but it can also mean the wrong account is signed in, the membership or plan does not cover the game, or catalog access has ended. Check the account and entitlement first; then check sharing, PlayStation Network status and system software, restore licenses, and use Safe Mode only if the earlier steps do not work.
First determine why you have access to the game
A game being in your library or having been downloaded does not, by itself, prove that you can still launch it. Separate the entitlement question—whether the account has a current right to play—from a possible local license-sync problem. PlayStation’s locked-games guidance recommends checking account and access details as well as console troubleshooting.

Monthly games
Monthly games are available at no extra cost while the account has an active PlayStation Plus membership. If the membership has expired, check its status before changing console settings. PlayStation says new monthly games are added each calendar month; a previously claimed monthly game is not the same benefit as ongoing access to a Game Catalog title. See PlayStation Plus monthly games information.
Game Catalog and Classics Catalog
Extra provides access to the Game Catalog, while Premium provides access to both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Catalog access requires an eligible plan and the game to remain available in the catalog. Check the current catalog listing rather than assuming a past download or library entry guarantees continued access. Details are on PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus games page.

Purchased, redeemed, or shared games
Sign in to the account that bought or claimed the game. For a recent purchase or voucher redemption, review that account’s transaction history. If another account provides access, check that account’s sharing setup: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5, or primary-console activation on PS4.
Work through these fixes in order
- Verify the account and entitlement. Switch to the account that claimed or purchased the game. Check transaction history for a purchase or voucher redemption. For a PS Plus game, confirm the membership is active or, for a catalog title, that the plan is eligible and the game remains available. If another account owns it, verify its sharing arrangement.
- Check PlayStation Network and system software. Visit the PlayStation Network service status page. If it reports an alert, wait for service to return and try again. Install the latest system software for your console.
- Restore the game’s licenses. This built-in function can address a padlock caused by a license issue. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect data. Use the steps below for your console.
- Check sharing settings if another account supplies access. On PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled where relevant. On PS4, verify that the owner account has activated the console as its primary PS4. Then retry the game.
- Use Safe Mode only if access is valid and the earlier checks fail. PlayStation’s locked-game guidance points to Clear Cache and Rebuild Database on PS5; on PS4, it recommends Rebuild Database if needed. Follow the current official locked-game instructions for the console before using Safe Mode.
Restore licenses on PS5 or PS4
| Console | Menu path | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses | Select the licenses to restore. You can also open the game’s options menu from the home screen or library and choose Restore License. |
| PS4 | Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore | Start the restore from Account Management. |
These paths come from PlayStation’s license restoration instructions. Restoring licenses can resolve a local license problem; it does not renew an expired membership or make an unavailable catalog game eligible again.

If the padlock remains
Contact PlayStation Support if you have confirmed the account has valid access and the recommended checks have not resolved the lock. Include any error code or message, the steps that reproduce the issue, and a screenshot or video if possible. For a PS4 download problem, PlayStation also asks users to note the date and time they attempted it. Use the contact options in the official troubleshooting guide.
